Anyone had any luck with getting an ATI Radeon 9550 (or 9600) for that
matter to work nicely under Linux (not neccessarily Gentoo specific)?

ATI Radeon 9600 works nice here on Gentoo AMD64 with 2.6.13 kernel, not on
that box now, cant say ATI drivers version. Playing AA got something like
30-70 FPS.

I've got a 9800SE (which is essentially the same as a 9600 Pro). It
works.... "nicely" is a matter of opinion.
Because I use 3D hardware acceleration, I use the proprietary fglrx
drivers, but many report that the kernel drivers are much more painless
(but you only get 2D, no OpenGL support).
What are you trying to do that you can't get done? And on what type of
system (desktop or laptop)?

Yes indeed sir, my 9600 (it may be ultra or something fancy i dont
remember) works spendidly with the ati-drivers. Goood with mutliple
monitors, great for gaming, haven't tested the tv out yet tho. and yes
i use gentoo.
Good Luck
