I could (definitely) be wrong, but I doubt that the ebuild forces -O3 in
the CFLAGS; perhaps you should consider dropping down to -O2 and see if
that helps. Also, the fact that -O3 is involved makes me at least wonder
what other 'unstable' CFLAGS you may be using, so please post your
emerge info.
