It might give you some hints with the same (or similar) laptops. To see if you have working acpi support check /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state They should tell you more-or-less the state your battery is in (charging or not, power etc). If these files exists then you have working acpi support, and the problem might be the gnome applets. What kernel are you using?
