No, Portage can handle binary apps just fine. We have Java, Unreal Tourna= ment 2k3/2k4, Doom 3, Neverwinter Nights... All kinds of binary-only apps. But all of them are closed-source (Except for the -bin version of some ra= ther big packages, manly to save people the compile time...). It feels kinda wrong to install a binary package of a (small) open-source= app on a source-based system...
