You know, that's very weird, Mark-- on my system
ls -l /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 46 jun 17 03:33 /etc/make.profile ->
/usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0
Perhaps your /etc/profile symlink is improperly created?
