How to identify external modem?
I think it is by running command:
ATI4 

Though, how do I connect to a modem from a command line to get a
response to ATI4?

$ cat /dev/ttyS0 &
$ echo ATI4 > /dev/ttyS0
$ kill %1

My modem also gives useful Information on ATI1, ATI3 and ATI9.

For a more advanced features, I use minicom.

googling for 'AT&Z' and 'AT command set'
gives many good web sites....

I also have been know to modify the 'S records' 
or 'S registers' with modems, but it get's tricky depending
on what you want in the connection.
