I run a pretty stable system. I do however run ~x86 for KDE and Gnome.
Something changed recently in an "emerge -Davu world" or "system" that
causes X to not start anymore? The Xorg log below doesn't have any errors or
warnings or anything. There are no unresolved symbols as the message says. I
did notice that glib was updated, but the "3242-glibc-2.3.5.log" doesn't say
anything interesting. I ran "rm -rf /root/.revdep-rebuild.*; revdep-rebuild
-av" and that said I was golden, it didn't re-compile a single thing.
I usually use 'meld' (x-windows) for my etc-update, so I do have some files
that need updating, but they don't seem that they should affect X??

If you are not doing the script updates, then you are not running a stable system. Please
do all the script updates, then reboot your system.

Seems the driver you are running doesn't know which chip is on the Gfx card.
Perhaps you should add ~x86 to nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx.
FWIW - I have to restart X - ^ALTDEL, about 3 times to get a visible display with
the nvidia driver - 7667, but that's due to the 6600GT I'm running. Maybe
they'll get a new bios out for it. But once started it runs fine at 1280x1024.
I even get 3D acceleration.

Well, I do run the etc-update stuff, however I do it from X-windows and
using 'meld' to graphically see the diffs. So I have a bit of a catch-22
here.
Can you tell me how I can remotely run 'meld' / 'etc-update' on my
notebook's X-windows off of the server? Then I can apply the other
etc-updates. Can this even be done, since I can't get X to start on the
server?

I have been using the nvidia stable emerge drivers and I haven't upgraded
the kernel AFAIK.
I guess I'll try to re-emerge the nvidia drivers. The last ~x86 version of
them really hosed up X good, so I decided on this box, to run the stable
ones.

Hi,
Quite easy, just edit "/etc/etc-update.conf" before running "etc-update".
Change "diff-command=diff -uN %file1 %file2" and "using_editor=0". Later
could run it in text-mode.
Or use "dispatch-conf, it makes a backup of the updated files in
/etc/config-archive. Check the diffs afterwards.
When X starts again restore your settings.

Well, I just re-emerged the nvidia drivers. They were basically the same
version, just a new -r part.

And luckily that fixed X-windows. I don't know why this broke. My kernel is
the same. But, I'm just glad this fixed it... Dunno why I didn't consider
this in the first place. I guess I only think of re-compiling the nVidia
drivers *IF* I change my kernel. Well, I guess I know this now for the
future in case. Thanks Bob for pointing out the obvious to me. ;-)

One of the things we just discovered on this list is that newer versions
of KDE are trying to use things like the Composite extension, and it is
causing problems for some people (slowness was the previous case).
Some things to try:
1. Disable Composite.
2. Disable DRI.
3. Try the x.org "nv" driver instead of "nvidia".
Depending upon whether and which one of those work, you will have a
place to start from on more debugging.

Probably not...more likely opengl or composite is causing the problem for X.

I tried to switch my window manager to Gnome and also XFCE (both worked fine
before too) and that didn't solve the problem, so I don't think it's a KDE
thing. But I have had KDE problems before as you suggest with other nvidia
drivers.

I've never been able to use the drivers at the portage tree for my
nvidia card, always used the ones downloaded directly from their
website, because the ones from portage gave me errors. Besides the
task to redo the installation each time I recompile the kernel, there
were no problems, ever.
Try it.

What login manager are you using Gdm or Xdm, I have been using Gdm
untill a while back and now after an update my X will not start using
gdm in my /etc/rc.conf. If I change it to Xdm in /etc/rc.conf or type
it in manually then X starts and I can get in Gnome. Changing the
Nvidia drivers has had no effect.

I don't use a login manager. It's a server and I really only use X-windows
for maintenance and 'meld'. So I "startx" manually after logging in to the
shell.
