Could you try something like: strings /dev/hda5 | less
With a FAT32 filesystem, I get:
mkdosfs
BRJF_KEY FAT32

Obviously I formatted the above with mkdosfs, but you can see the label
(RJF_KEY) and type as well.
By comparison, on NTFS, I get:

0000454 Invalid partition table

0000543 Missing operating system
0077003 NTFS
...
