[gentoo-user] Add in cards?

[Jerry McBride]

Would anyone recommend an add-in IDE card for the PCI bus? In particular, I'd 
like to add four more IDE hard drives to my server.

I just use the Ultra133TX, which does UDMA6 (DMA 133).

There is no fundamental problem that makes Promise cards fail on Via
boards. I use them together under Windows and Linux.

Drivers have also been in all stock kernels for *years*.
Never had to look to Promise for drivers for their cards, so don't know if 
they have written their own.

that is nice to know. hm but their raid-drivers are closed, aren't they?

If I have a look at the promise-website I find a lot of downloadable drivers 
for SuSE and RedHat, does not look much like 'in kernel'

Maybe. But what was being discussed was the ULTRA 133TX which is not raid...

The driver is in the kernel, under drivers, ata... PDC202xx...

Screw their RAID stuff.
I'd be very suprised if it isn't some half-assed hardware/software 
winmodem-esq setup anyway.
Full software RAID is a perfectly good, if not better, solution. We do crummy 
twin IDE "server appliances" here, which software RAID1 all partitions, 
even /boot (with a little grub trickery if hda fails it'll still boot).

no, there is a problem with VIA and PCI in general, not promise related. 

If you want to use your pci-bus for more than moving data to the soundcard, 
via has a long history of pci-quirks that makes it a dubious choice for a 
stable environment. That is all. I do not trust via boards.

Interesting. I have no such experience. I use multiple Via boards
today and have no trouble with the ones I own. Certainly the problem
could be out there but I haven't experienced it.

Sometimes these reputations are very old and hard to live down. Intel
also made chipsets that clearly didn't do PCI correctly at one time.
They got past it. My thought is that Via's reputation may be worse
than today's reality...

I had an older BX board with a Via chipset. Then I saw an article
somewhere (/. or maybe tomshardware?) that said Via chipsets had
problems with the PCI bus.

I checked and it was true. But I hadn't noticed it until then so take
that for what it's worth.

I'm sure what you saw was real, for that Via chipset, but not
necessarily for all Via chipsets. If we still had access to Intel
Saturn or Neptune chipsets I could show you problems with Intel also.

Whether the same chipset in a later revision, or a newer Via chipset,
has the same problem is not clear. That's my only point here. Via has
problems. Intel has problems. SiS has problems. (Lots of problems!)
Right now I'm using an ATI chipset in this laptop. It seems to have a
couple of compatibility problems. It's the nature of semiconductor
design. However, over time these things tend to get fixed so I don't
limit myself to saying that one specific company is 'bad' at PCI. (Or
anything else.)

Heck - the chip designer that did your chipset and caused problems,
knowingly or unknowingly, probably no longer work at Via anymore
anyway! ;-)
