Hi,

 for this weekend I planned to migrate to baselayout 2
 finally.

 On gentoo web I found this: 2.
  Migration to OpenRC
  Migration to OpenRC is fairly straightforward; it will be pulled in
  as part of your regular upgrade process by your package manager.

 I tried to check this (emerge -pv openrc) and found:
  !!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "sys-apps/openrc" have been masked.
  !!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
  - sys-apps/openrc-9999 (masked by: missing keyword)
  - sys-apps/openrc-0.5.1 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
  - sys-apps/openrc-0.4.3-r4 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
  - sys-apps/openrc-0.4.3-r3 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
  - sys-apps/openrc-0.4.3-r2 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
  - sys-apps/openrc-0.4.3-r1 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
  - sys-apps/openrc-0.4.2 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
  - sys-apps/openrc-0.4.1-r1 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)

 Especially "masked by: missing keyword" let me doubt whether
 or not it is sane to migrate....

 How to proceed here ?

 Best regards,
 mcc

Many users who populate this list have unmasked it and emerged it without a
problem. I am still holding onto the stable path and won't be upgrading as
yet - perhaps because the benefits of doing so are not earth shattering, plus
I'll have to learn new invocations to update my systems. Mind you, I'll have
to learn them sooner or later when it becomes stable.

YMMV.

openrc needs to be in your packages.keywords as it's still unstable.

The -9999 version is not keyworded at all, which is right and proper for the
version in cvs

I'd suggest to delay the update 'till it hits stable.

"Stable" and "testing" are different branches, after all, and if you
mix them, results should be pretty much unpredictable, since both are
tested as-is.
So any package in your ("stable") branch will have baselayout-1
compatible script running with openrc and baselayout-2 scripts, which
are _known_ to be incompatible in some cases.
Of course, hitting "stable" branch should mean that package spent some
time in "testing" and init-script has been modified to be compatible
with both branches, but still I doubt that the overal result should be
more stable than "testing" branch, since no-one has really tested your
particular package mix.

PPP startup scripts still do not work with openrc. Just a heads up in
case you use them.

OK. This has me wondering something. I have DSL but I have dial-up for
my back-up. Does either of these use ppp? I think my modem uses pppoe
but I think that is between the modem and AT&T but nothing to do with
the connection between the puter and the modem. I do know the dial-up
modem uses ppp tho. That I am sure of.

Would this affect me at least on the dial-up? DSL would be OK right?

No.

The new /etc/init.d/network script doesn't work support ppp yet, but openrc
still support the old baselayout behavior.

If you emerge openrc without changing any USE flag, it will have the "oldnet"
USE enabled by default, and will support your old /etc/conf.d/net file. So
there is no problem for ppp users.

I had originally migrated an entirely ~x86 system. Then I downgraded
almost all of the system, except for openrc & co because it was enough
work to upgrade, so I didn't want to downgrade to x86 and then
eventually openrc migrate again.

For the most part, the Gentoo Baselayout and OpenRC migration Guide is fine.

You can see my package.keywords for openrc on an otherwise stable
system below. I leave in some garbage comments since it might give
you an idea what I toyed around with.

#Dependencies to keep openrc with otherwise ARCH=x86

#<=sys-apps/openrc-0.4.3-r3 ~x86
<=sys-apps/openrc-0.4.1-r1 ~x86
<=sys-apps/baselayout-2.0.0 ~x86
#<=sys-fs/udev-145 ~x86
<=sys-apps/sysvinit-2.86-r12 ~x86
#<=sys-devel/libtool-2.2.4 ~x86
#<=sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.8 ~x86
#<=sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.8 ~x86
<=sys-apps/sysvinit-2.86 ~x86

<=sys-fs/cryptsetup-1.0.6-r2 ~x86

# udev-145 messes up libvolume_id (see bug 281632)
#<=sys-apps/hal-0.5.13-r2 ~x86
#<=sys-apps/util-linux-2.16-r1 ~x86
