Hey Mike,

I passed on vmware for my use as it is quite the overkill for my simple
needs. Also, vmware does not currently run on the most recent kernels. And
secondly, you only get to use it for 30 days... the vmware workstation
evaluation copy that is.

Over here, I decided to go the qemu/kqemu route. Although I am only able to
emerge kqemu, with qemu-softmmu failing miserably... I was able to download
a binary off the Qemu website and it runs beautifully. 

Although I don't like running windows in qemu... it's a resource hog bar none,
linux in qemu is a jewel. You can find excellent install and usage
instructions in the obvious places like the wiki, forums and the Qemu
webpage. You can also find a gem of an article about it on the LINUX
JOURNAL website. It'll give you quite a detailed howto with the windows
installation.  My first qemu experiments involved windows98se and windows xp. 
By a factor of maybe 2, windows xp was slower than molasses when compared to 
win98se. Since then I've managed a few linux images and I've been thinking 
about trying a BSD image just for the experience of it.

I don't know if vmware provides cow files, Qemu does... what this allows is
for you to setup your windows image anyway you want, then reload your qemu 
image with cow file support enabled... and any modifications made during your 
windows session is written to the cow file, not your windows image. If things 
get really, really hashed up, closeup Qemu... delete the cow file and start 
afresh... A perfect way to dump the worms, viri, malware, etc... or your 
accidentally hosed linux image...

Really, really good stuff.

That and I believe the server package requires vm support in the cpu while the 
workstation does not.

When I was at the vmware website, browsing the "system requirements" it listed 
older versions of both linux distributions and kernel versions. Perhaps those 
were the "supported" settings and the versions outside of that are the 
unsupported fare?

I never installed vmware, just simply too big while other vmanagers are much 
smaller.

Exactly, and by the same token, you'll find Gentoo is unsupported
whatever the kernel version. VMware Workstation is a commercial product,
so the compatibility list is more do do with compatibility with their
support team than the software.

I cannot get bridged netwokring to work, no matter what I try. I have 
searched high and low for an answer, and I have spend hours 
experimenting. Bridged networking broke for me when 2.6.21 came out 
and has never worked since.

Now nothing except NAT and host-only networking works. So, until this 
bridged networking is fixed, I cannot recommend VMware Workstation to 
anyone.

On the other hand, it's working just fine here on 2.6.23-gentoo-r3. Not much 
consolation, I suppose, but at least it does work some of the time, for 
some people.

Hos anyone been able to get 6.0.2 to work?  I tried to evaluate it, but
everything crashes when I try to enter the serial number.  There's an
outstanding bug at b.g.o and I filed a support request about a week ago
with VMWare, but they haven't touched it yet...

Hmmm... With all the fresh posts about vware, I too tried it recently and my 
results were the same as yours... clich help, enter serial number and bang... 
crash. I thought it was me... :')

Try virtualbox... similar to vmware.

I did try  VirtualBox, but my network games don't work (like
Civilization II - my wife running Win98 can't connect to me) and
Civilization III fails because some security module can't be found...

You might try a no-cd crack, if this is indeed caused by 
copyprotection as I suspect.  I think they're legal to use (if
you have a license for the game, of course) and to write/download,
although there's no guarantee that you'll download the right thing and
not a virus, or that it will actually help.  

I run all the games I can with nocd cracks anyway, so that I don't have
to put in the CD.

app-emulation/vmware-workstation-6.0.2.59824 is what I installed.

(BTW, I started the thread. Perhaps you can find the post where I show

Is the host on a wired or wireless network? I found bridged wouldn't work
over wireless, so I use NAT on my laptop.

There is a unofficial hack discussed at 
http://communities.vmware.com/thread/95630?tstart=0&start=0.  It has 
worked for many but not for me.  If anyone knows any other tricks, I'd 
be happy to hear about them.  I'm using a gentoo 2.6.23-r5 kernel with 
the Broadcom 4311 driver.

I have both, but bridged networking (for me) works with neither. With 
eth0, I get a Limited Connectivity state in WinXP; with ath0 (D-Link 
DWL-G650 PC card) I get Disabled.

I recently tried the vanilla 2.6.23-14 vanilla sources to see if that 
made a difference, but it did not. Of course I used the same .config 
file that I am using for my gentoo-sources kernel.

If someone could send me their .config file for 
gentoo-sources-2.6.23-r6 that they use on a laptop, I'll give that it 
a try.

I don't know if this is relevant, but two things:

1. The VMware devices that are used are VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet 
Adapter #5 (for NAT on vmnet8) and VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet 
Adapter #4 (for eth0 on vmnet0). I wonder why they aren't assigned to 
adapters in the range 0-3?  I never see adapter #0 or #1, even when I 
use WinXP's Device Manager (with hidden devices visible).

2. There is a Gentoo directory called /etc/vmware/vmnet8, but no 
directory /etc/vmware0. Yes, the eth0 bridge is up:

$ ps -efww | fgrep bridge
   ==>
root 30055  1  0 09:32 ? 00:00:00               \ 
/opt/vmware/workstation/bin/vmnet-bridge -d     \ 
/var/run/vmnet-bridge-0.pid /dev/vmnet0 eth0

/dev/vmnet0 exists and has the same owner and permissions as /dev/vmnet8.

Right, but you can use the vmware player for free with existing VMs. You 
can even create VMs from scratch, there are some websites which offer 
this, you fill in information about the OS, memory and such, and get a 
config file you can use with the vmware player.

With VMware, you can create snapshots of your VMs, and revert to older 
ones if you like. Or you can use VMs in undoable mode, and decide whether 
you want to keep the changes made since the VM was started.


I do not know qemu yet, but I guess it may be easier to setup. You are 
right about the recent kernels, the vmware modules did not compile for me 
several times until vmware released patches. Quite annoying. But apart 
from that, vmware works quite well.

[gentoo-user] VM Ware or not?

Hello, folks --

Most days, I work remotely from the 'ndoze net via rdesktop when I have
to access it for some reason. But the bandwidth there is getting choked
as others follow suit.

I'm thinking I'd have a better time of it if I just had my own little
toybox -- I mean, Windows XP installation -- at home. Sure, I can
dual-boot, but then I lose the whole of my reasons for having a real
OS. And I'd put up another machine, but I have enough anxiety over the
ones I have to maintain already. Why bring that kind of trouble into
your home?

So, the quick question is, is VM Ware the best way to go? I think XP is
still lurking on a partition here... and I do need to run Internet
Extorter, Outlook, etc... pretend I'm in their "domain"...

At any rate, I'm hoping some on the list can give me a leg up on this.

My first question is, what does this mean to me:

* app-emulation/vmware-workstation
     Available versions:  4.5.3.19414-r7 5.5.5.56455 ~6.0.1.55017!f
~6.0.2.59824!f

... when I downloaded the evaluation license and a tar.gz, does that
satisfy the "!f", for example? What do I do with it, then? I do notice
the version number matches.

And the other question I hate to ask -- I'm pretty sure there is one,
but, if there is a Gentoo HOW-TO on this process, where is it and IS IT
UP TO DATE??? ;-)

Any and all pointers welcome!

We've been using VMware Server and VMware Server Console at our lab.
Everything works really good. The point is that you can't use a real
phisical partition of any of your disks. You have to create a virtual disk
for the guest system.
It works beautifully with a virtualization-compatible processor. We've been
using VMware Server at a Core 2 Quad and things are going so great that
right now there are 17 VMs running on it. Almost natively (performance).

VMware Server supports raw disks too. You can mount partition from
physical disk to virtual machine easily.
