[gentoo-user] No mouse on Lenovo T400

  My "excellent adventure" continues. Having finally rebuilt python 3.6
on the new install, I find no mouse either in X or in text mode (gpm).
Before anybody asks...

1) Yes I have OHCI and UHCI USB protocols selected.
2) The mouse works fine when I boot another linux distro off a USB key.

  Any other ideas?

Run 'usbdevices' on the other distro to see what driver it uses, or perhaps 
diff the two kernel configs in case you missed something.

  Thanks.  That got me going on the right track.  I eventually traced it
down to "Device Drivers ==> Input device support" in "make menuconfig".
There are 2 entries to select for mice; "Mouse interface" and "Mice".
The original defaults had "Mice" selected, but not "Mouse interface".
Mind you, they had "Support for memoryless force-feedback devices" and
"Touchscreens" selected; go figure.  Selecting "Mouse interface" and
rebuilding the kernel solved my problem.

  Next... has anyone gotten icewm-1.4.2 to not crash? I simply cannot
get it to run on any of 4 Gentoo machines.  I've given up and migrated
one over to Fluxbox.  The others are being held back at 1.3.2 and
package-masking newer ICEWM ebuilds.  If nothing pops up soon, I'll have
to move them over to Fluxbox.

Unfortunately, smaller window managers are not maintained reliably on Gentoo. 
I suspect there is a lack of younger blood coming through the ranks.  My 
enlightenment desktops are so buggy presently, I was considering what to move 
to.  There are a couple of bugs on 1.4.2 reported in bugzilla for icewm and 
the last one has "maintainer-wanted" as assignee.  Previous bugs had 
Polynomial-C as the assignee.

Check if this describes what you've come across, but there is no fix proposed 
yet:

Sorry Walter, I do not use icewm or fluxbox, but they are listed here
with other "window managers"

I currently on lxde, waiting on migration to lxqt (maybe).

and I have transient (3-button) mouse function issues across a variety
of scenarios. MY system has more than ample resources for what I do
(FX-8350+32Gram).

The left mouse button goes to sleep. I have to click it dozens of times
to wake up. "Focus" does not always follow as it is setup to do,
requiring left button clicks to correct. Mouse just dissapears for 3-20
seconds. just to name a few issues. Other times it is flawless.

I think Mick has a valid argument below.

Not my issue but your statement about WM of a lesser kind not supported
well is spot on. I wonder if lxqt is better and worth the migration?

I wonder what's the best long term strategy for a robustly supported
light weight windows manager and associated minimal desktop? Will it be
robustly support in gentoo?

The arm64 dev boards are getting close to being ample for my needs
(mouse+keyboard+hdmi+usb) interfaces to the HPC clusters I've been
working on. 4G_of_ddr4 will do the trick. Long term, these
'power_hogging' workstation/servers will only be brought online, when
needed and on cold nights.

So; I'm very interested in what others, with minimal desktop interfaces,
have in mind. I'm just not up on these issues, and would really like to
'follow the herd' on gui_desktop minimization options.


I just ordered a galaxynote9 and may consider it for a (gui) terminal
interface to the (gentoo) HPC clusters, depending on the interfaces it
comes with.

Any and all suggestions for a pathway forward for a stable and minimal
windows manager is greatly appreciated.
