[gentoo-user] Copying settings from Konqueror-3.5 to 4.3

Maybe I am getting lazy - but wouldn't mind all my ftp, webdav and ssh 
settings under the Network places to have been carried over into KDE4.  How 
do I go about copying them over?

I did 

cp -a .kde3.5 .kde4

and all the settings (not just only konqueror's) were picked up.

That did not work for me, all windows had no window title then. But it 
worked fine for partial applications when I copied just their data over. For 
konqueror, that would probably be share/config/konquerrorrc and 
share/apps/konqueror/.

I also found odd inconsistencies copying .kde3.5 to .kde4

Kopete has twice reordered my contacts
akonadi integration with kmail was flakey
system tray icons come and go as they please
and various other oddities that don't happen with new users

It would seem that a largely vanilla 3.5 config migrates to 4 with low risk. 
As the old config is more and more modified, the odds of 100% success reduce.

I copied selected files like emailidentities, parts of kmailrc, etc.
and they seem to work fine.  Only two rather annoying problems:

I can't find the POP Filters to copy them over and so far all my
messages arrive in the main inbox.

I can't find the config file which contains the Outgoing mail account
settings (I have a number of outgoing accounts and would rather not
have to set them up manually again).

Any ideas where these are hiding?

in kde4:

filters:
~/.kde4/share/config/kmailrc
smtp accounts:
~/.kde4/share/config/mailtransports

I presume the locations are similar in kde-3.5
p.s. I used grep -ir to find those

Scratch that - no filters are recognised.

As a matter of fact they are not recognised because restarting kmail
results in all the filters which were manually pasted in KDE4 kmailrc
being deleted ... o_O

the problem may be with me selecting Redland instead of Sesame2
because I do not have/use Java.  Hmm ... wonder if this is also why
kdewallet (or modern equivalent) is no longer there?

The KDE4 still has the kdewallet which I find quite useful. As I started my 
KDE4 setup from scratch, I saved the wallet with KDE3.5 and imported that in 
KDE4.

It seems that the kwallet does not perform as expected:

With 3.5 I would fire up kmail (remember I am running xdm/fluxbox not 
kdm/kwin) and when I clicked on 'Check Mail' it caused kwallet to launch and 
ask me once for the master passwd.

With kmail4 this does not happen.  The kmail application asks for passwords 
separately for each account of mine without kwallet being launch at all ... 
until I click to send a message!  Then it launches fine and asks for the 
master password.

I can't call this a bug - but I find it problematic to have to enter 3-4 
account passwds instead of just one.

I got it wrong, again!  All that I needed to do is click "Remember passwords" 
for each account.  Now kwallet is launched exactly as in KDE3.5 ... and deals 
with the mail login.

Apologies for all the noise - other than Akonadi which it seems is a bit ropey 
without Java, kmail4 is very much the same with 3.5 give or take a few 
cosmetic things.  All in all, a happy camper now.

SOunds like you did not select the "store password" check box in the kmail 
account config dialog.

Without a wallet acive, it will try to read passwords from kmailrc (IIRC)

Yeah, I've seen mixed outcomes when doing that. I was probably lucky.

What I really did was:

1) save the "vanilla" .kde directory that was created when kde4 first started 
up, to have a safe rollback in case something goes wrong

2) cp -a the .kde3.5 dir to .kde4, as said

3) check that things were mostly correct, and if not rollback to the saved 
.kde dir I created in step 1

Turned out everything worked fine (or at least everything I've seen so far), 
so I didn't need to rollback, but probably, as they say, YMMV.

~/.kde is a symlink to ~/.kde3.5. So there is nothing to backup or 
restore.

Hmm ... strange.  I have the same symlink on a non-kdm desktop, but launching 
any KDE application or launching startkde from a terminal brings up KDE4 
applications and desktop.

Started kde4 from a terminal and went to System Settings and added
/usr/bin/sqlite3 as the Akonadi command, but nothing much changed.
So, for now I am giving up on Akonadi.

I tried to import old KDE2 address book settings from within the KDE4
address book and it failed - couldn't find it in KDE3.5.  However, I
then opened my eyes properly, searched better and found
.kde3.5/share/apps/kabc/ which contains, as Alan kindly suggested, my
address book data.  Copied it over, deleted the old
.kde3.5/share/apps/kabc/lock directory and now the KDE4 kmail lists
all my address book entries!  Yes!  :-)

Also, I found a solution to the kmail filters - I opened the filters
tab in kmail4 and used the import button, pointed it to the 3.5
kmailrc and it imported them all fine.  Very pleased.  :-)

Haven't cracked this one yet.  Running media:/ gives me an error:
"Protocol not supported".  Dolphin shows USB devices on the left hand
menu/panel, but Konqueror wont.  Any ideas welcome.  :-)
