I would just do the following:

emerge --depclean world -a
revdep-rebuild -a

--depclean will remove packages that were brought in as dependencies,
but no longer are dependencies. revdep-rebuild will make sure that
nothing got removed by revdep-rebuild that should not have been
removed.
