The router (or modem in router mode) is already configured, you usually just have to set the right auth method (PPPoE) and provide a valid user/pass, and that's about it. It will only authenticate when the connection is ready or keep trying till it suceeds. You don't need to start the connection ever, you'll get a firewall and DHCP server, and the configuration (usually a web interface) is easy (at least easier than a ppp connection). Most routers get all information and relay it (DNS, gateway) to their address, or provide this info in DHCP, so there's no configuration to do at your computer, as an eth0 not configured is assumed DHCP. Also you can get rid of all ppp related stuff from the computer. I only say that cause my dad's home connection was setup that way so I would never have to spend a whole weekend afternoon teaching him again, he turns the computer on and its already online. -- Daniel da Veiga From mboxrd@z Thu Jan 1 00:00:00 1970 Received: from pigeon.gentoo.org ([208.92.234.80] helo=lists.gentoo.org) by finch.gentoo.org with esmtp (Exim 4.60) (envelope-from ) id 1LgorK-00058R-F5 for garchives@archives.gentoo.org; Mon, 09 Mar 2009 23:26:10 +0000 Received: from pigeon.gentoo.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by pigeon.gentoo.org (Postfix) with SMTP id 48A9EE04F2; Mon, 9 Mar 2009 23:26:09 +0000 (UTC) Received: from mail-qy0-f125.google.com (mail-qy0-f125.google.com [209.85.221.125]) by pigeon.gentoo.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 111B7E04F2 for ; Mon, 9 Mar 2009 23:26:09 +0000 (UTC) Received: by qyk31 with SMTP id 31so1446305qyk.32 for ; Mon, 09 Mar 2009 16:26:08 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=domainkey-signature:mime-version:received:in-reply-to:references :date:message-id:subject:from:to:content-type :content-transfer-encoding; bh=nyD6uXo9isqK/oa2H9xzY6lmV6s1IPe3Jg7fJeJuBIg=; b=On5c/r8lzLYG8Ll14UblivqWDHUfp2xHekx/v9mw/l8cD1ZRJVfaTgDU6W2CGKg8FV LWt829MPkImM3KD2SMjJYu0JKK5zoiYSjsuOc7on92M6ObjlZGrqNetlgDuWAY62X/Px zfTQGNFE45RKIrCBRcdpwjBQqhyK8d8FkbLm0= DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; c=nofws; d=gmail.com; s=gamma; h=mime-version:in-reply-to:references:date:message-id:subject:from:to :content-type:content-transfer-encoding; b=N4AqqKmOpWZ7Fh5NNX9bMV65dCK2gxwdOmaXxsODQa46GXlIYkMMyHqMuer/vRznJH S/zAPiPTT8UvM8ur8uCPEnHLu+SwiNrBc6cl9kZhJAYvTSvP8REzPsQoYs8F7c6QlotO c0FnUCK45TpdslLMmQfbANU165ZWVT3F5R4AY= Precedence: bulk List-Post: List-Help: List-Unsubscribe: List-Subscribe: List-Id: Gentoo Linux mail X-BeenThere: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org Reply-to: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.229.79.17 with SMTP id n17mr3121878qck.82.1236641168737; Mon, 09 Mar 2009 16:26:08 -0700 (PDT) In-Reply-To: <20090309220656.GA29769@detritus> References: <20090308202032.GA8284@detritus> <342e1090903090931o25474aafl35dc30da5a55fa91@mail.gmail.com> <20090309220656.GA29769@detritus> Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2009 20:26:08 -0300 Message-ID: <342e1090903091626y707cf380s2283686577d1e80b@mail.gmail.com> Subject: Re: [gentoo-user] Re: ppp connection problem From: Daniel da Veiga To: gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org, gentoo-user@gentoo.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Archives-Salt: 32719be2-45a5-4d09-a0ba-b4caa8b7815e X-Archives-Hash: af5da050cd31388d58ccc104c1425105 Message-ID: <20090309232608.1VttvQj8UKK5mZWJNUOcdodhwvLtfmNgz1tPjTnEruc@z> On Mon, Mar 9, 2009 at 19:06, Moshe Kamensky wrote: > * Daniel da Veiga [09/03/09 12:33]: >> On Sun, Mar 8, 2009 at 17:20, Moshe Kamensky >> wrote: >> > Hi, >> > >> > I am trying to help my father install gentoo on a new computer (I am >> > across the ocean).
