Another thing, some programs will NOT WORK AT ALL if you do not update your config files, been there, done that. If your program, in its evolution process, increases security, changes some variable names, change its behavior in any way while dealing with config files, and you keep your old config, you're in trouble. Gentoo gives you the new format config file, so you can merge changes interactively, avoiding problems and keeping your config up-to-date.
