Hello list,
I have quite a few sites that firefox doesn't display properly. It seems to
be short of some symbols. I've attached two screen shots; in the first, the
peculiar thing next to the text should (I think) be a broad up-arrow; and
the second shows some buttons from twitter which occur in many other sites
too.
Does anyone know what I'm missing?
Google-chrome displays these pages properly.

Do you have all the required fonts installed? If you look back a couple
months I had unreadable prints and distortion and it turned out to be a
font misconfiguration issue.

Do you use NoScript? If yes, does it allow webfonts?

I can't go back that far locally, but these are the fonts I have:

I should have said that the only extra I have is AdBlock Plus. Disabling it
makes no difference. And your hint reminded me to install YesScript, which
also makes no difference.

You might want to enable liberation-fonts.
When I was having the weird font issue, firefox was the only thing
affected. All other applications would work fine. I actually kept opera
around for sites that wouldn't display or print properly, but no longer
have to.

Have a look at the inspector (right-click the offending item, press q). I
don't know whether FX 38 already had that, it's so hard to keep track
noawadays with the ongoing version number inflation. On the right-hand side
of the inspector there should be a Fonts tab which should show you a preview
of the font being used.
Did you always have this problem or is it new with this version of Firefox?

Check:
Preferences -> Content -> Fonts:
"Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
If you want to toggle between sane (i.e. your) fonts and random web crap
you can install the "Document Font Toggle" extension.

Peter has AdBlock on which interprets some of the icon fonts (e.g. FontAwsome)
used on some websites as adverts and blocks them. Disabling it and restarting
the browser (ought to) make it work. FF doesn't seem to have the same problem
with Google's icon fonts.

Well I'm damned (again). I had that disabled in an attempt to prevent sites
from showing their text in pale grey, which is only any good if your eyes
are many years younger than mine. It doesn't work though. And now you prompt
me to look at colours in preferences | content. Just the ticket.

Thank you Holger. I shall make good use of it.

FWIW, most of these problems went away for me with Fx 41, and I don't
know if the fix went into Fx 38 or not. The bug was
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=789788>, and comment 143
summarizes what they ended up doing.

I can't tell either from what I can see.
