Hi,
I tried to install ReactOS into my Virtual Box which went fine
so far.
Booting itsself was no problem either....but instead of getting
a desktop I got a simple uniform black screen.
No error messages so far...nothing....only the black void.
bugs.gentoo.org when searched for "ReactOS" or "black screen"
shows nothing related.
In the internet I found one anchient message from glorious
times, when bugs were real bugs ... <wrong movie...sorry>...
a message, which is no longer related due to its age.
Does someone run ReactOS successfully with virtualbox
and knows how to circumvent this BOD?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Cheers!
Meino

Did you manage to get to the stage of the graphical wizard, which displays after
rebooting for the first time ? This is the point at which you set the name and
Administrative Password.

I've got it running perfectly on QEMU, although it does seem a bit sluggish.
With VirtualBox, are you able to virtualise other systems, or is this issue
specific to ReactOS ? Have you ever managed to run a previous version of ReactOS
in the past, or is this your first attempt at doing so ?

Yep...even (re-) booting the newly created image works...the ReactOS
logo apears....and then instead of the desktop I get this black
void...

I have not tested other systems yet.
It works fine with my old computer...but that it doesn't work now, may
be a coincidence in time and not necessarily a logical dependency.
I can't rememember of VirtualBox or one of its dependencies were
updates in the meanwhile...
Have you ever managed to run a previous version of ReactOS

As said, I have successfully run ReatOS on my old computer.
Cheers!

From [1]:
Note: VirtualBox 5.2.38 version is highly and strongly recommended.
VirtualBox 6.x branch is still very buggy and unstable, causes fake
regressions to be found in ReactOS.
I know you often run unstable software; are you on the 6.x series ? Try
downgrading to the stable version currently in gentoo.git (5.2.40).

Hi Ashley,
thanks for the hint ... I am currently recompiling...
...will see then.
Cheers!

Hi Ashley,
the compilation failed so I took the binary version 5.2.40,
which reproduces the same behaviour as with the previous
attempt.
Cheers!

Why did the compilation fail ? Is it the same reason as Peter (qtcurve) ?

This is a bit of a long shot. I run ArcaOS (modern version of OS/2)
in QEMU. During the install phase it would come up in 1024 x 768 mode.
But at reboot after install, it had video problems and refused to go
beyond ancient VGA mode... 640 x 480 pixels x 16 colours.
After some trial and error I rebuilt my linux kernel *WITHOUT* Bochs
video extensions. Bochs video extensions allow the VM to "talk to the
virtual bare metal" video. Without Bochs, the VM talks to VESA VBE, and
the ArcOS system setup menu offers up to 2560 x 1600 x 16 million
colours. My monitor is "only" 1920 x 1080.
Maybe ReactOS is coming up OK but can't talk to the video because it
expects standard VESA VBE. Suggestion; try rebuilding your linux kernel
*WITHOUT* Bochs video extensions. If you have Bochs as a module, you
may be able to "blacklist" it instead.

I don't run "desktop environments"; I run useful applications

Hi Walter,
BOCHS wasn't compiled in nor set as module.
Cheers!
