[gentoo-user] Network scanner

I've a Brother scanner ADS-2400N connected via network port.

- I edit: /etc/sane.d/saned.conf (entered my network address: 10.0.0.1)
- started: /etc/init.d/saned
- installed brother printer drivers:
  rpm  -ihv  --nodeps brscan4-0.4.4-1.x86_64.rpm

  # brsaneconfig4 -q |grep 2400
 65 "ADS-2400N"

but when I run as user: "scanimage -L"
device `epson2:libusb:002:003' is a Epson GT-9300 flatbed scanner

only my epson scanner is showing up, NO Brother scanner is detected.

What am I missing?

Maybe that you are using a Red Hat package manager on a Gentoo machine?
Or that you wanted to ask fedora-user and sent it to gentoo-user by mistake?

No, Brother only supply rpm or deb drivers.
I was able to use "rpm" to install brother driver this way, so it should
work with the scanner as well.

Well, I'm not here to fix every problem you encounter and judging by the
sheer amount of posting you make and the level of content, I have to
conclude that you are assuming we are.

What steps have YOU taken to try figure this out and actually help
yourself? Saying that you installed an rpm on a Gentoo machine and stuff
don't work, what's wrong? is not the expected level of troubleshooting.

Hi Alan,

I would give Thelma a break; a couple of times she found the solution
subsequent to posting.  Thus, I believe the size of her output is more
due to extra chattiness than to sloth :-)

This happens to me too sometimes, and I think practice helped me to
improve in this respect, so I think it will help others too.

Good point, often preparing to ask a question helps solve it, or at least 
helps focus on what is most likely to be the problem.

Back on topic, I always held the view that one should not mix and match 
package managers on the same system, as they may end up stepping on each 
other's toes.  So, I thought emerge and rpm don't go together.  Is this not 
the case?

Using another package manager is no worse than installing from source,
either way you are installing software without the knowledge of portage.
A better solution is to look for an ebuild on Bugzilla, which probably
ends up installing the same files but now portage knows about that.

There's even an rpm eclass for such ebuilds to call on when software is
only available as an RPM package.

This is not always the case, I had a Dell printer using an RPM that
would not install properly. It was placing files in places where Gentoo
did not expect to see them. I unpacked it and installed it manually and
got it working.

The easiest way to install it is to see if there's an ebuild available
in an overlay.

Scanners can be picky in linux. I bought a Canon flatbad knowing it had
support in linux. A newer model of the same line of scanner that I have
is *not* supported properly in linux. To give you an idea.

I think I'm missing entry in make.conf:
I have
SANE_BACKENDS="epson2"

but I'm not sure what to enter for brother scanner.

Unless you are using portage to install the Brother drivers, I don't
think that setting will matter.  Emerge takes note of settings there
when it is about to build packages.  If you install a package by hand,
outside portage, it won't likely matter. 

I might add this for future reference.  Before buying equipment, make
sure it works with Linux, the distro you use for sure.  Some brands work
pretty easy but has some models that don't.  HP for example generally
works however, I've seen certain models that have something unique about
them that causes them to not work at all or only certain limited
functions.  In my experience Lexmark is one that I have never got to
work, any model.  I avoid Lexmark like it's a disease.  Scanners are in
the same boat as printers, since some have both built in. 

I've seen on this list where some seem to have got Brother to work. 
Maybe a search of past threads would shed some light.  They might have
some tiny snippet that helps get you on the road to success.

That's right, the setting tells portage which of the drivers from
sane-backends you want installed. The Brother drivers aren't in
sane-backends.

I had a Brother AIO devices and did have it working. Search bugzilla for 
an ebuild for the Brother proprietary drivers.

Apology for all those annoying questions.

I was able to make it to work:
rpm  -ihv  --nodeps brscan4-0.4.4-1.x86_64.rpm
emerge -avq media-gfx/brother-scan3-bin
brsaneconfig4 -a  name=Brother model=ADC-2400N ip=10.0.0.138

I know, mixing portage with rpm is not a good idea.

Brother ADS-2400N scanner works with USB, Network connection, duplex
works as well.
The mail reason I bought this scanner is that it can be connected to
network and has TWAIN driver (my Fujitsu ScanSnap-junk doesn't have one).

However, following your suggestion I found "ebuild" in overlay for this
scanner, so I reversed the installation and used ebuild:
media-gfx/brother-ads2400n-bin

The only annoying feature in this scanner is that doesn't have "auto
crop" (windows does) auto-feeder does not work.  Scanning small receipts
showing black borders on both sides (snapscan borders are white - easier
to fax, print).
I'll need to ask Brother support if it possible to change the borders to
white background.

It might be the feature of the driver (I think).
In Windows ADF works with Brother ADS-2400N but produces same black
border on the side.  So it must be Brother's driver.
Snapscan 1500 - ADF doesn't work with "xsane" but side boarders are white.

I was under impression "xsane" was the only scanner software available
for Linux.
I'll try gscan2pdf from overlay and report back.

SANE is the main backend driver software, but xsane is just a front end
to that which may or may not provide all the features you need.

I'll resync next month and do an upgrade, thank for the pointer.

The black border on the scan (that I'm concern with right now) I think
it has to do with Brother driver, as I have SnapScan S1500 and the
border are white (suitable for printing, faxing etc.) I asked Brother
support for a solution, will wait for their reply.

I just tried gscan2pdf.
It does not offer auto-feed either; black borders still persist (so it
must be an issue with Brother driver.

In addition, I've noticed big difference is scan size of an image.
Small receipt size: ~4in x 3in saved as pdf B/W in 200dpi resolution:

gscan2pdf produced file size: 66.7kB
xsane produce file size: 12.4kB

So in file size perspective xsane produced much smaller size.
gscan2pdf provide crop tool to cut the borders, xsane does not have any
crop tools.

Sounds like it.

File saving is a different process from scanning. For B/W scans, I use
djvu with gscan2pdf, the files are *much* smaller.

Xsane doesn't need to provide image manipulation as it works as a GIMP
plugin.

Just for curiosity can you scan small piece of paper 4in x 3in in B/W
200dpi in PDF; see what size you get.
