[gentoo-user] how to start KDE

I've got Gwenview to behave by installing Plasma-meta :
Systemsettings shows up with adequate options & single-click is back,
as are the previews of pix on the folder icons.

I've been a happy user of Fluxbox for many years,
but am willing to see how well KDE 5 works in 2016 .
From a raw command terminal, I use 'startx' with appropriate  .xinitrc :
what do I need to have in the latter in order to start KDE 5 ?
What pkgs am I likely to need to install to make it work ?
I tried 'emerge -pvt kde-startkde', but that seems to be KDE 4 :
what do I need for KDE 5 ?

So far, I've installed Konsole (and a few other apps) with requirements
& Plasma as above.

Hi,
You should install plasma-desktop and use startkde in your ~/.xinitrc if
you do not use session manager.

Thanks.  I've been trying out KDE 5 for the past week
& generally it's usable : it's about as quick to start as Fluxbox,
given that it starts apps automatically, cursor movements seem smoother
& some window expansions are a bit cleaner.

However, I've discovered that it's not recognising the numeric pad keys :
they simply have no effect, even as surplus cursor keys.
There was a discussion in a forum in 2015 about this problem
& it was traced back to a bug in Qt 5.5 , supposedly fixed in 5.6 .
I'm using 5.6 , but the problem is still there.

Has anyone else encountered this ?  Are there any suggestions ?
Yes, I use Numlockx & have tried all options in SystemSettings.
The numeric pad works without difficulty in Fluxbox.

Maybe by accident you enabled to move the mouse with these keys? It's
somewhere in the system settings. I think there's also a hot key for
enabling it (which could explain why it's enabled by accident).

Mouse -> Navigation -> Move Pointer Using NumPad : apparently set by dft.

Sometimes it happens to switch by using Shift+Num... Or maybe another
modifier.

In addition to my other post:

So it's LShift+Alt+Num. However, I tried: It no longer works for me.
I'm pretty sure this is because I disabled accessibility features
completely. I hate some beeping window coming up just because I hold
shift for too long. "Oh you held shift for 5 seconds, you can enable
sticky keys" - no I don't want to!

The only use I found for 'sticky keys': when using a remote desktop app which doesn't have the option to send common key combinations like ctrl-alt-del.

What I miss in all those implementations is a visual display of what is 'stuck'.

At login, they are restored, but only with default parameters.
I can add the parameters I want in the KDE Menu
& have tried starting them from a 1-line script in /usr/games/bin/ ,
but KDE ignores everything except the basic binary.
Can anyone think of a way round this difficulty ?

I've done that a few times. There's a menu bar that pops out when you put
the mouse pointer on the right hand edge of the note, with an option to
delete it.

but I don't think I'll test it until I have to (grin).

Middle click on the maximise button for vertical, right-click for
horizontal (these can be changed of course.

To set the shortcut, go into the Shortcuts>Global KEyboard Shortcuts
section of system settings and select KWin from the dropdown. Then you
can set the shortcuts, there are none defined by default.

It's in the global hotkeys in category kwin.

I've set that right clicking the maximize title bar button maximizes
horizontally for me, left click vertically, pulling the window to the
edge maximizes both directions.

And then I've set Meta+up to maximize a window (Meta+down minimize,
Meta+left = left half, you get the idea). So I know shortcuts are there.
