The file-type icons are still be where they should be, but for some reason they were no longer associated with their respective mime types. I've now solved the problem for them by going to the 'file association' part of system settings and editing the icons for the mime types which were missing icons. The program icons which do not show up in the Quicklaunches haven't changed on my system. They also don't show up in the Kmenu, which uses the same .desktop files -- I didn't realize that before because I rarely look at the menu. AFAICS, all the icons that no longer show up in the menu or the launchers are in /usr/share/pixmaps/. I can use kmenuedit, which I think edits the .desktop files, to select the icons which should be displayed, but they're still not displayed. > Surely there are things you can try before posting here. I cannot work out what package upgrades might have caused any of this. I thought it went without saying that I had looked at the list, but obviously that was a bad thought. > I think that if none of this works, it would be sensible to see if > you can downgrade some relevant the packages that you installed > yesterday (i.e. those with "icon" or "theme" in the name), and see if > this reinstates your visual file-type portrayals. All of those have had the previous versions removed from the tree, so downgrading isn't a viable option for me.
