Gmail has introduced its own method of two stage authentication and unilaterally decided to describe IMAP4 fully compliant client applications as "less secure apps". They are by no means less secure, just because they do not delegate the second stage of IMAP4 authentication to a browser. Google may want to move us all to using a browser, but thankfully we still have a choice. As far as I know Thunderbird is a "more secure app" because it delegates OAuth to Firefox, but other clients which do not integrate with a browser will not. The solution is to enable access by "less secure apps" in one's Gmail account security settings. Alternatively, I think there is a kludge whereby you can obtain a token and send this via your mail client to Gmail - but I am not sure about the mechanics of this.
