What is a good acroread replacement?

I'm not sure what changed, but as of a few weeks ago I can no longer
install acroread on my AMD64 system (something to do with x86
emulation librarys being blocked by something in the Xorg server).

I decided to try to live without acroread.  I've been using evince and
emacs, and they're both satasifactory most of the time, but they fall
down when it comes to printing.

One of the things I like to be able to do is to open up a PDF document
and print a portion of one of a page in a size that fills a single
8.5x11 sheet.  This is trivial in acroread, but impossible in evince
or emacs (actually I can't figure out how to print at all in either
one).

Being able to print a portion of a page is particularly useful for
things like printing out an area of interest from a C size schematic
or printing a single table from a user manual or datasheet.

How do I do that without acroread?

[I'm running an XFCE desktop, so would prefer something that doesn't
pull in a gigabyte of Gnome or KDE dependancies.]

Yes, I _have_ figured out how to do it with various command line tools
(pdftk, psresize, etc.), but that involves 20 minutes of trial and
error (and dozens of sheets going into the recycle bin) to do
something that would take 20 seconds in acroread (and work on the
first try).

Not sure if it's a good replacement, but I'm using Google Chrome. It has 
a built-in PDF viewer. (I just drag&drop PDF documents into an empty tab.)

It can also print. It might be worth checking out.

I use qpdfview. I like it because of it's bookmarks, tabs and
rendering quality. 

If you don't want QT stuff then you can try atril instead. It is a very
simple but also very fast PDF-Viewer.

With both programs it is possible to print whole documents or single
pages without problems. But it is not possible to print partial pages.

I never had a need for such a feature, but would probably use gimp for
that purpose.

Okular can save a selected part of a page to a PNG file, which it can then
print. It's not quite what you are looking for but pretty close.

It will need kdelibs, how much else is needed on your system can only be
answered by portage.

Hello Grant,

I do not remember doing anything special, but acroread works for 
me on amd64 with, these:

acroread-9.5.5-r2 (nsplugin)
xorg-server-1.16.4 (glamor ipv6 nptl suid udev xorg)
profile :  [1]   default/linux/amd64/13.0 *
and of coarse lxde-0.5.5-r4

If you want to know how other things are set, just ask.
I cannot live without acroread. I have one phantom problem.
Often the pdfs autoload with gimp, not acroread. It seems 
like a differnet problem everytime I fix this, where via a dialog
popup, preferences in seamonkey ..... It just keeps happening
over and over and again; I have no idea why.

I did hack extensively at updating all of my radeon/xf86 setting
recently.

I was looking into this a bit deeper and found this disturbing
opportunity with all things Adobe [1]. Maybe you are pursuing
the best path in lieu of what I have recently read about all
things Adobe.........

I thought gimp dealt exclusively with bitmapped graphics?  It can view
and print PDF files?  One other problem is that the printers I have
access to don't deal well with large high-res bitmap data, so I'd like
to stick with vector formats.

I've probably got the ABI_X86 stuff set incorrectly, but I've never
been able to find understandable documentation on how that's supposed

Indeed GIMP still can't handle vector graphics. When you open a PDF file
with GIMP, you can choose the resolution (dpi) you wanna have. Then GIMP
imports the PDF file and converts it to bitmap format.

I never had problems with printing large bitmap graphics on any of my
printers (some HP, some Epson and one Lexmark printer) as long as I had
enough RAM. But I think this also depends on the printer driver.

Sometime I guite reading and just start trying things.....
I too would appreciated reading something clear and concise on these
inter-related issues, codes and configurattion.


Probably the only help I can provide you is how things are configured
on my system, but not "why" related to these issues......

I've been living without acroread for a couple weeks now, and evince
has proven to be a good replacement except when I want to print
something (usually I only want to print a couple pages or just a
portion of a page).

After the big multilib switch was thrown over the weeked I removed the
one remaining emulation library, and everything is now updated.  So
far, ncurses has been the only package for which I've had to add the
abi_x86_32 USE flag (32-bit ncurses is required for grub-legacy).

So, just for the sake of curiousity, I asked emerge what would be
needed to install acroread again.  I was pleased to see that emerge
now thinks it possible and only wants to rebuild 81 packages with an
added abi_x86_32 USE flag (I was actually expecting more).

Assuming that will work, it appears to be an easier path than getting
okular to install. I've been trying to figure out exactly what that
would entail, but emerge is as yet unabled to come up with a list of
dependencies.  I'm currently on emerge iteration number 12 or 13, and
we seem to have gone into a loop where emerge alternates between
demanding that I add the qt4 USE flag for media-libs/phonon, and then
demands that I remove it.

I think we'll see how re-installed acroread goes...
