We have these things called USE flags...

 eix hplip
* net-print/hplip
     Available versions:  3.14.1 (~)3.14.6 (~)3.14.10 {X doc fax +hpcups
     hpijs kde libnotify -libusb0 minimal parport policykit qt4 scanner
     snmp static-ppds}
