Going from 3.12.13 to 3.14.14 using "make old config" and then the
standard build (64 bit). At the DEPMOD stage near the very end I get...
DEPMOD 3.14.14-gentoo
/usr/src/linux-3.14.14-gentoo/scripts/depmod.sh: line 57: 27721
Segmentation fault "$DEPMOD" "$@" "$KERNELRELEASE" $SYMBOL_PREFIX
make: *** [_modinst_post] Error 139
I've backed out and eselected 3.12.13 again. Any ideas what gives? I
can't find anything relevant on Google. Google search turns up stuff
like so...
1) cross-compiling and using wrong host; I'm not cross-compiling here
2) out of disk space; nope, I've checked and have plenty of space
3) out of memory; on a Lenovo Thinkpad with 6 gigs of RAM?
And yes, /usr/src/linux-3.14.14-gentoo/scripts/depmod.sh line 57 is...
"$DEPMOD" "$@" "$KERNELRELEASE" $SYMBOL_PREFIX

I *hate* when that happens! Just a few random ideas that may help the
old bulb light up :)
Can you re-emerge 3.12.13 without any errors?
The kernel build system uses perl (not sure about python), so I always
wonder if perl-cleaner may help fix strange new errors.
I'm guessing you're running gentoo-stable on that machine? Has gcc
been updated recently? glibc? linux-headers? perl? python? kmod?

It fails now, as does 3.12.21-r1. Fortunately, I always keep 2
kernels around. The production kernel is call "Production" and new builds
always go as "Experimental". I use lilo to select the version to boot.
Only after booting and running successfully for a couple of weeks do I
run my "promote" script which copies the Experimental kernel and map and
.config backup files over top of their Production equivalants. So my
Production kernel is not screwed up.

I tried both "perl-cleaner --all" and "perl-cleaner --reallyall", but
I still have the problem. Is there a way to manually run depmod?

Stable x86_64. glibc, perl, and python were on the list. This is a
notebook that hadn't been updated for a month or so.
cd to /var/log/portage and ran command
ll -og | grep Aug\ 13 | sed "s/^.*Aug 13 //"
to get a list of what ran that day...

Now what? Anyhow, I tried "lilo -R Experimental" and rebooted. It
seems to work OK. I run a monolithic kernel, so modules won't be a
problem.

Well, if you have no modules and CONFIG_MODULES=n you can't expect depmod
to work. However, you wouldn't expect it to segfault, so a bug report is
still in order.

With modules active, I don't get a build-failure.
Been running 3.14.14 since it hit stable in the tree.

AFAICT the only time depmod runs is during the "modules_install" phase.
Do you do "make modules_install" when building a kernel?
BTW, the kernel build scripts do use python as well as perl. Have you
tried python-updater and checked to see if your various "eselect python"
settings are appropriate?

This won't help with your segfault, but you might find "qlop" useful
for that purpose. (app-portage/portage-utils)
What is your "ll" command? I have it aliased to run 'ls -laF|less' but
yours is obviously something else.

Or use genlop with the --date option, much simpler
genlop -l --date yesterday

I'm lazy. I have 2 scripts sitting in /usr/src which I run from
/usr/src/linux. After running "make menuconfig" or "make oldconfig" I
run ../makeover which goes like so...
#!/bin/bash
make && \
make modules_install && \
cp arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-experimental && \
cp System.map /boot/System.map-experimental && \
cp .config /boot/config-experimental && \
lilo
Once an experimental kernel has been running OK for a couple of weeks,
I promote it to production with the script ../promote
#!/bin/bash
cp /boot/System.map-experimental /boot/System.map-production
cp /boot/config-experimental /boot/config-production
cp /boot/kernel-experimental /boot/kernel-production
lilo
My lilo boot menu has 2 boot choices, "Production" and "Experimental".

So it's self-inflicted :)
Try replacing that last line with something like
(grep -q 'CONFIG_MODULES is not set' .config || make modules_install)

Ouch. I just reakized that the "&&" means that the cp commands are
not executed. So I did the following from the commandline from
directory /usr/src/linux
cp arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-test
cp System.map /boot/System.map-test
cp .config /boot/config-test
Then I...
* added a "Test" entry to lilo.conf
* ran "lilo -R test"
* rebooted
I am indeed running kernel 3.14.14 this time...
[thimk][root][/usr/src/linux] uname -a

I still get...
[thimk][root][/usr/src/linux] (grep -q 'CONFIG_MODULES is not set'
.config || make modules_install)
INSTALL drivers/char/kcopy/kcopy.ko
INSTALL drivers/thermal/x86_pkg_temp_thermal.ko

I did a short test run. X seems to run OK. I'll try to put it
through a more thorough test later. I'll be out of town, and mostly
disconnected from the net Tuesday through Friday, so things will have to
wait.
Out of sheer curiosity, will there be a kernel 3.14.15.29 <G>?

So you do have modules in use?

There was talk about it but it turned out to be pi in the sky ;-)

[thimk][root][~] lsmod
Module Size Used by Not tainted
lsmod: QM_MODULES: Function not implemented
I think I may have found the solution. First of all, the system is
running mdev from busybox, instead of udev. Secondly, I found
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-955120-start-0.html which suggests
* unmerge modutils
* emerge kmod, with the "tools" USE flag.
Before I screw anything up, does this sound reasonable?

I don't run "desktop environments"; I run useful applications

Yes, that's what I did and all's well.
But *don't* do it until you return from your trip, lest the spirit
of desktop environments put a curse on your applications.
