Hi, Gentoo.

I finally got round to emerging my post-gnome system, triggered by the
stabilisation of gnome-3, and the consequent shift to systemd, and what
not. I last synched my /usr/portage 34 days ago. I had been putting
this change off, it turns out, with good reason.

Now when I attempt to start xfce (which I'd been using fine for a long
time) with "startx", it appears at first to be OK: the desktop is
displayed on the screen and the mouse works. However, after a few
seconds of waiting, X crashes out, returning to the tty. On a second
attempt to start X (without rebooting), it doesn't get as far as
displaying the desktop - it just crashes.

To eradicate gnome, I changed my profile from
default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/gnome to
default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop, and removed the gnome USE flag from my
/etc/make.conf (and maybe one or two other things I can't remember). My
box then spend 6 hours rebuilding software.

On the screen of the tty, after X crashes, appear the following error
messages which might be relevant:

xfce4-session: GNOME compatibility is enabled and gnome-keyring-daemon is found on the system. Skipping gpg/ssh-agent startup.
env: kdeinit4: No such file or directory
Cannot find '.setLaunchEnv' in object /KLauncher at org.kde.klauncher

    (xfce4-session:3112): GLib-WARNING **: GChildWatchSource: Exit status of a
child process was requested but ECHILD was received by waitpid(). Most likely
the process is ignoring SIGCHLD, or some other thread is invoking waitpid()
with a nonpositive first argument; either behavior can break applications
that use g_child_watch_add()/g_spawn_sync() either directly or indirectly.
    xfce4-panel: Restarting...

    (xfwm4:3125): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: ICE I/O Error

    (xfwm4:3125): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: Disconnected from session manager.

    (xfsettingsd:3136): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: ICE I/O Error

    (xfsettingsd:3136): libxfce4ui-WARNING **: Disconnected from session manager.
    /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc: line 107: 3112 Segmentation fault xfce4-session
xinit: connection to X server lost

I've also got /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The most high information lines in it
appear to be these:

    [ 4364.118] (**) evdev: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard: Device: "/dev/input/event3"
[ 4364.118] (WW) evdev: AT Translated Set 2 keyboard: device file is duplicate. Ignoring.
[ 4364.124] (EE) PreInit returned 8 for "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard"
    [ 4364.124] (II) UnloadModule: "evdev"

I've attached /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Would somebody please help me get this problem sorted out. Thanks in advance!

This is the worrisome line.

First, could you confirm if you did the full complete portage steps
while migrating:

- tweak USE, profile etc etc
- emerge -avUND world
- emerge -av @preserved-rebuild
- emerge --depclean
- revdep-rebuild [seldom necessary these days, I usually do it out of
habit...]

Let's first establish if portage reckons the system is consistent before
trying to track down why your session segfaults

Not done. When I do this with -p, I get wierdnesses. emerge wants
to install cifs-utils and samba (why, I can't fathom) and says they
have mutual dependencies. It also wants to update
    gnome-control-center to gnome-3.

Then it complains about (mainly) gnome stuff, alleging it should be
    updated to gnome-3.8 versions. Hmm.

Not done in a million years. I do this with -p, then I see 289
packages need removing. How important is this? (or is my last post
    the answer to this question?)

I tried this, and it reported "everything up to date".

We should keep in mind that you are doing a rather substantial
migration, gnome-3 is in the works and you want to get rid of it. Best
approach is to really get rid of it, not just tell portage to not use it
anymore.

First, @preserved-rebuild:
You have packages built against other packages that have changed or been
removed, so portage needs to rebuild them to get everything consistent
again. This is important (however cifs-utils and samba is not relevant
to this thread)

@depclean:
You must remove old clutter after every emerge world. If you remove
"gnome" from USE, portage won't use that flag, but your gnome stuff
stays installed. Normally, portage only unmerges packages that cause
blocks, leaving you to do the real work with depclean.

I recommend you do these steps in this order

1. emerge -at --depclean
Inspect the list carefully, 289 packages is a lot. Take your time;
quickpkg anything you aren't sure of. When you are happy the list only
contains stuff you want rid of, let it do it's thing

2. emerge -avuND world
Let portage figure out what it needs to add and rebuild

3. emerge -av1 @preserved-rebuild
Fix up any inconsistencies left from emerging world

That should get you a consistent system. Now run xfce.

With luck, it will work as it should.
If not, we can then start the real debugging

I would then repeat the three steps until none of them want to do
anything.

I have had a few problems with more complex systems of late. Definitely
add in "revdep-rebuild -i" and "python-updater" even if the error
messages don't indicate they are not needed. "perl-cleaner --all" was
needed as well a week or two ago.

I also had a couple of systems die on the libpng update with weird
errors as it was trying to use old libs and not the newer ones ...

So, eh, a mixture of XFCE, GNOME and KDE; what's going on here?

You'll want to start with inspecting ~/.xinitrc; from there on, look
into the configuration of both your session and X itself.

I started off (4 years ago) with xfce, found it was missing a feature I
wanted (being able to switch keyboard mappings with a mouse click), so I
switched to gnome. At some stage, I emerged Umbrello (a UML program)
which pulled in a lot of KDE stuff. Then I got fed up with the political
machinations with gnome, and moved back to xfce, which now has the
mouse-click keyboard changer. With Gnome 3.8 moving to stable (and thus
threatening me with systemd, etc.) I had to purge gnome from my system.

Umbrello and KDE are now gone, but it seems a ghost of KDE remains
somewhere. There's a ghost of gnome, too - when I startx, I still get
these messages on the screen:

xfce4-session: GNOME compatibility is enabled and gnome-keyring-daemon is found on the system. Skipping gpg/ssh-agent startup.
env: kdeinit4: No such file or directory
env: qdbus: No such file or directory

.

My ~/.xinitrc contains but a single line, "exec startxfce4". It's not
obvious, from reading the man pages, where this mysterious configuration
is done.

No such luck, as yet. I still get these messages when trying to startx:

xfce4-session: GNOME compatibility is enabled and gnome-keyring-daemon is found on the system. Skipping gpg/ssh-agent startup.
env: kdeinit4: No such file or directory
env: qdbus: No such file or directory

. Somehow, the remnants of a KDE program are hanging around somewhere.
I've no idea what qdbus is, or where I've got it configured.

qdbus comes from qtdbus, it was pulled in by KDE way back when.

$ equery belongs /usr/bin/qdbus
 * Searching for /usr/bin/qdbus ...
dev-qt/qtdbus-4.8.5 (/usr/bin/qdbus)

It's being launched because you have a KDE app somewhere in your startup
scripts (or possibly kdeinit4 itself)

How do you start X? A display manager or using startx?
What are the contents of the relevant files?

$ eix qtdbus
[I] dev-qt/qtdbus (4.8.5(4){tbz2}@01/12/13): The DBus module for the Qt
toolkit

Have you got -qt4 in your USE flags? If not, I suggest you put it in make.conf
and then emerge -uaDvN world.

This may not help, but:

$ grep -r  kdeinit4 /etc
Binary file /etc/ld.so.cache matches

(That's the only occurrence I could find here on this KDE box.) So some library
may still be lying around with KDE links.

Something's nagging at the back of my mind about having to specify your
desktop in a config file, maybe /etc/conf.d/xdm though my copy of that just says
kdm.

/etc/conf.d/xdm only specified the display manager to use. Individual
apps are then started by the display manager or the xsession. That of
course can be done in any way that dm or xsession feels like doing it so
it turns into quite a rabbit hole.

Possibly somewhere in /etc/X11. s /etc is CONFIG_PROTECTed, unmerging KDE
leaves its files in /etc/X11.

Yes, that's true. I'm trying to remember some hoop I used to have to jump
through to get KDE started, but with this man-flu I've got I can't think of
anything. I'm almost sure I used to have to make an entry like kdeinit4 in
some file probably under /etc.

Not much help, I know.

Maybe Alan has a .kde directory under $(HOME)? If so that's likely to cause
trouble on a non-KDE box.

With app-portage/portage-utils installed, do:

    qlist -IC gnome-base gnome-extra kde-base kde-misc

This will give you an overview of what's still around of those two.

The gnome-keyring-daemon comes from gnome-base/gnome-keyring; as for
the other files not found, they seem to be started from somewhere in
your config. I'd suggest `grep -r '\(kde\|qdbus\)' /etc` to check where
these are launched from. Maybe in ~/.config you might be able to find
and/or purge more.

Looks good.

In older versions (4.0) $XFCE4HOME contains config, it default to
~/.xfce4/; in newer versions (4.2) XDG has been adopted and things are
split over $XDG_CACHE_HOME and directories under $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS. The
latter defaults to /etc/xdg and I think /etc/xdg/autostart/ might be of
interest to investigate here as well.

I'm getting a bit weary with this issue. Thanks for the help, so far. I
spent a lot of Sunday evening trying to locate executables/libraries
which still invoke kdeinit4 and qdbus. To no avail.

Next bright idea: why don't I emerge these two binaries again? This will
surely help me locate the offending binaries, and even if it doesn't,
might get my X working again as a workaround.

> qdbus comes from qtdbus, it was pulled in by KDE way back when.

I've emerged qtdbus, and the "qdbus" error message has gone. But I can't
for the life of me locate the package containing kdeinit4. I've looked
through /usr/portage/kde-base/, but can't identify the KDE base package I
need. equery only works on already emerged packages.

Which package contains kdeinit4?

startx. My .xinitrc contains solely "exec startxfce4".

Thanks! ~50 packages altogether, which took just over an hour to
emerge. Sadly, it didn't help get xfce running. I seem to have a hard
segfault in xfce4-session. That's after purging xfce and re-emerging,
too.

That's two weekends I've been without X. I don't know what I'm going to
do, right now. Might even try KDE, just to get some sort of working X.

You could do worse, but you could also try Fluxbox,
which is very simple & configurable & works with KDE & other apps.
I start X with 'startx' & have in ~/.xinitrc

  xscreensaver &
  kdeinit &
  startfluxbox

There may be something amiss in your home directory. I think the easiest way to
confirm/deny is to create a 'disposable' user account (mine is named 'tester')
and see what happens when 'tester' starts xfce from a virgin home directory.

I've solved many such problems that way. You can copy configuration stuff
from your normal user's home directory to the test account one item at a time
and see where xfce starts to segfault. Then back up one step :)
