Hi, Gentoo.
Would somebody please help me with this error message, which arose from
# emerge -puND world
:
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies \
!!! Problem resolving dependencies for media-gfx/sane-backends from @selected
... done!
!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "media-gfx/sane-backends" has unmet requirements.
- media-gfx/sane-backends-1.0.23::gentoo USE="ipv6 (multilib) usb -avahi -doc -gphoto2 -threads -v4l -xinetd" SANE_BACKENDS="abaton agfafocus apple artec artec_eplus48u as6e avision bh canon canon630u canon_dr canon_pp cardscan coolscan coolscan2 coolscan3 dc210 dc240 dc25 dell1600n_net dmc epjitsu epson epson2 fujitsu genesys gt68xx hp hp3500 hp3900 hp4200 hp5400 hp5590 hpljm1005 hpsj5s hs2p (ibm) kodak kodakaio kvs1025 kvs20xx kvs40xx leo lexmark ma1509 magicolor matsushita microtek microtek2 mustek mustek_pp mustek_usb mustek_usb2 nec net niash p5 pie pixma plustek plustek_pp qcam ricoh rts8891 s9036 sceptre sharp sm3600 sm3840 snapscan sp15c st400 stv680 tamarack teco1 teco2 teco3 test u12 umax umax1220u umax_pp xerox_mfp -pnm"
The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied: <=============================================
sane_backends_mustek_usb2? ( threads ) sane_backends_kvs40xx? ( threads )
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])
########################################################################
I'm mystified as to what a "REQUIRED_USE flag constraint" is. What is
the significance of "sane_backends_mustek_usb2"? It would appear not to
be a use flag. What is the significance of "( threads )"?
Any other helpful comments appreciated.

Bassicly its emerge is telling you that if you have
sane_backends_mustek_usb2 enabled you also need to enable threads and
similarly if you have sane_backends_kvs40xx enabled you need to enable
threads. So in your case you need to enable threads or disable those 2
backends.

Ah, it looks so obvious now. ;-) Thanks!
Another question - is there any sensible way of cutting the unnecessary
stuff out of SANE_BACKENDS? That variable is set in the ebuild, and it
doesn't feel the Right Thing to edit the ebuild file.

Set it in 'make.conf'.

you can override that variable in your make.conf.
eg.
SANE_BACKENDS="hp"

If you are like me and not sure what to search for, this is a example:
SANE_BACKENDS="avision"
You would almost certainly need to replace that avision. I found a used
scanner only to find out why they didn't want it either, it was broke.
lol If you do a emerge -vp <sane package>, it should show you the
available options. You could google for them to but emerge could be
faster.
Hope that helps.

Thanks. For me it's SANE_BACKENDS="plustek". Not sure why, since it's a
Canon scanner. Got that info from running sane and opening its info
window.

I got mine given me by somebody who'd just upgraded to Windows 7; it
didn't work in W7. Haven't you got to love Microsoft? ;-)

Oh, I feel your pain, and won't go back there.
When we moved back to the States and opened the comp shop, we bought a
HP Officejet Pro 8500 A910. It does everything (including scanning) from an
embedded webserver. Just type it's IP in your browser and you can do whatever
you want with a multifunction printer. Scanning has never been easier, the
quality has never been even close, and it's so extremely nice to have a
printer that works ... every function.
We've always used HP printers with Linux because they supply drivers; but now,
more than ever, I wouldn't consider anything else.
Just my 2c...

Well, I wouldn't know about Microsoft. I have never actually bought it
and only run across it on someone else's system, which isn't very often
anymore. My brother is now converted and he was the one I worked on
most. Now, I don't work on it, I just update it. I'll tinker on one to
try to fix things but I'm no winders expert.
Glad you go it going tho. I got to get me a scanner so I can scan in
some REALLY old pictures. I got some so old, they are not only black
and white but they are on brittle paper too.
