[gentoo-user] Razor-qt advice

Hi All,

An old Pentium 4 machine which is refusing to die, is getting problematic 
running the full KDE desktop.  I was thinking of using razor-qt which has a 
broadly similar look so as to not alienate the users (they mostly use KDE 
apps).

Have any of you tried it out on a stable Gentoo and are there any gotchas?  
Any feedback on it as a KDE desktop replacement?

From the Oct 20 automated package removal email ... you might want to
investigate why before moving to it.  I have no knowledge of why, just
noticed its the same package thats on the removal list.

As sometimes happens, "removal" really means "moved" :
it has a new Portage category all to itself, like Xfce.

I tried it a while ago and it didn't compare to KDE, nor should it, in
the same way the LXDE shouldn't be compared to GNOME.

It's more like LXDE on QT, but was more limited when I tried it. Maybe it
warrants another try.

Yeah, it is a lightweight-KDE if I may say. It is pretty stable though
and upstream is very responsive to bugs and
feature requests. Go for it ;)

I tried it, too, last week or so. It is still quite limited, although many 
necessities are already there. For instance I was unable to get the pager 
panel applet to show more than one desktop.

Mick,
   I've used 0.4.2 a bit. It worked fine but as a KDE user it felt a
little strange. I didn't invest much time to make myself more
comfortable.

   My trading partner who is newer to Linux (about 1 year now) has
been using razor-qt for the last month or so. He was fine with 0.4.2
but when they moved the package group they also had an update to 0.5.
Unfortunately this did not produce correct resolutions on one of his
three monitors so he's back to running KDE and doing updates on razor
until that gets fixed. (TTBOMK he has not filed a bug report.)

Thank you all for your responses.  The PC in question has two monitors, with 
different resolutions, so I will be needing this to work fine (or will never 
hear the end of it).

I'll make some time to try it out over the weekend and if they don't like it I 
may push the boat out and switch to e17 (which I am more familiar with).

I thought it was USE=branding in lightdm that did it, but I disabled branding

use the -t option to emerge.

that will tell you in a tree display what pulls in what.
Reading the ebuild for that package tells you why.

Thanks Alan, I set USE="-lightdm" and installed it without gnome dependencies.

It seems lightweight enough and troublefree.  The only two thinks I couldn't 
find how to set is:

1. Primary monitor:

The taskbar (or whatever you call it) at the bottom of the screen.  The user 
has two monitors of different dimensions and in KDE I had it set to show the 
taskbar in the right monitor 1920x1080, i.e. using the right monitor as the 
main monitor.  Instead with razor-qt the left monitor 1280x1024 is set as the 
default monitor with the taskbar at its bottom.

2. GPG-agent:

KDE starts gpg/ssh agents with its start-up script.  Razor-qt does not seem to 
have something similar to clear existing gpg agent processes and start new 
when the desktop loads.
