I just heard about opendns.org for the first time today, but their
website makes it seem that I'm the only person in the solar system
who's not already on the bandwagon.

Anyone know if they are as wonderful as they sound?

If you are using ISP DNS and it is slow, or hijacking domains like
search engines, and if you like your DNS to be a content filter, then
sure. :) Google DNS is similar thing.

Personally I just run unbound on my PC and don't want it to block any
look-ups anyway.

Well, try it. I've used it in the past but I've quit because
1) I really don't need a content filter and other fancy services
2) their redirection on missing domain names became annoying, especially
on slow mobile connections
3) my ISP doesn't do shenanigans like hijacking domains and latency is
about as good as opendns's.

Especially concerning latency I recommend testing it. For example dig
(net-dns/bind-tools) measures query time.

Florian Philipp

Or, in my case, all ISPs in my country are required to use a DNS server
called "Nawala" that performs web censorship. And, as one would expect,
that totally breaks DNSSEC. Not to mention making DNS resolves becoming
very slow.

So, I used Google DNS and the famous 4.2.2.[1-6] servers.

Rgds,

I am using OpenDNS in my Home Network, besides of going faster, I can block
certains websites for my little brothers and in my work, we use it to
prevent people to use IM and such things.

I don't have problems with my ISP, nothing to complaint, but using OpenDNS
seems to go a little bit faster.

Anyway, you may want to take a look by yourself.

This can be disabled you know...

We've been using them for a very long time and had zero problems...

We don't use any of the blocking or fancy stuff though, and disabled the
redirects.

One caveat - do *not* use them on a mail server if you do RBL lookups on
any service that meters your usage (like zen.spamhaus.org), they block
access to their services from public DNS servers like opendns and google...

I've used OpenDNS for so long without problems that I'd actually
forgotten that it is OpenDNS that I'm using. I get an email from them
maybe once a month telling me a few things about their company but
that's no big deal. It works well and has been for me 100% pain free
for years.

HTH,
Mark

I have used them for several years. They are very good, and the basic
service is free. I use them primarily for filtering and tracking blocked and
unblocked web page access.

Please note that I was not able to use the web IP page they suggest for
configuring ddclient. Instead, I use dnsomatic.com, and all works well.
DDclient is pretty easy to set up. Drop a line if you have any questions.

Terry
