Ah - gcc-config.  I did gcc-config -l, and it displayed 2 versions of
gcc.  Then I did gcc-config --help.  Then I did

    gcc-config x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.5.3

, and now gcc is working again, or more precisely the new one is working.
