I looked at updating to the latest Libreoffice 3.4.2.3
& found it wants to install a long list of deps,
many of which seem to be caused by my 'java' USE flag.
As a result, I checked my home-made list of installed pkgs
to see which were part of Java & why they seemed to be needed.
Not a few proved to be unnecessary today,
but the rest depend on 4 underlying pkgs,
ie Libreoffice Cups Libidn (for KDE 3 , which I want) Db (for Libreoffice).
If I remove 'java' from make.conf ,
which features will I lose in LO Cups KDE3 ?
Is there anything else I've overlooked ?

You'll lose the ability to run java applets, commonly found on the web
for many critical things.

I removed java from my USE for LO (plus gnome and gtktoo) and have not
yet seen any ill-effects.
The last time I read a definitive statement on Java for OOo was early
in the 2.0 series, then it mentioned database connectivity as the
prime thing that used it. That's connectivity as in Base, the Access-
like db front-end thingy

Well, I don't use Libreoffice or Cups to access the WWW
nor do I use KDE3 for more than a couple of games:
I manage my desktop with Fluxbox & have some KDE4 apps installed.
What am I going to need Java applets for ?
Any other comments ?

Unless you care to explain what you define as a web "critical" thing, I will
continue to run my boxen without Java - just as I have been doing for at least
8 years so far ... ;-)

yes, i recall reading that Java was necessary to use OO's database.
however, i have no use for that in the foreseeable future.
does anyone else know whether Java is needed for LO's database stuff ?
so far, it looks as if i shd remove the USE flag,
recompile the relevant pkgs & see what happens when i try using them.
further comments still very welcome & thanks for those so far.

wizards/templates in LO, and some export filters in LO use java.

some people use lynx or w3m on a virtual terminal and are happy. That does not
make them a good example of usual user behaviour.

Thanks & to the others who replied.
I deleted 'java' from the make.conf USE list
& recompiled Libreoffice (latest testing) + Cups + 2 deps for KDE3.
Printing is ok from LO & Vim (via the Printdialog extension);
LO help calls up a WWW page, which doesn't help,
but I've downloaded 2 PDFs with the help for Writer + Calc,
which sb better than the rather clumsy version included inside OO ;
the 2 KDE3 apps continue to start (Kmahjongg Kworldclock).
Emerge throws out a dire warning re compiling LO without Java,
but doesn't say exactly what the dire results wb.

I have submitted bug # 381823 to suggest a more appropriate warning
from the LO ebuild.
I have unmerged all the Java pkgs & removed the 'gcj' USE flag.
Gcc 4.5.3-r3 now compiles much more quickly (Core 2 Duo, 2 GB memory) :
(1st time) by Gcc 4.4.5 with 'gcj' it took 40 min ;
(2nd time) by Gcc 4.5.3-r3 without 'gcj' it took 24 min .
Doing a regular weekly system update yesterday, I had the feeling
that it was quicker with Gcc 4.5.3 , but have no actual figures.
The only remaining small puzzle was 'emerge -Dup world' (testing version),
which wanted to remerge Pdftk 1.44 using Gcc with 'gcj' enabled,
but 'emerge -pv pdftk' offered to go ahead without any such changes.
Pdftk is useful, but not so useful as to force me to re-install Java:
I haven't tested whether it still works.
