The first time I tried gentoo ithough I was utterly defeated by my=20 lack of understanding of USE flags. Then I read the handbook and it=20 all came together like magic. :) IMO the USE line in make.conf really should only contain the universal=20 stuff you can't live without, specifying everything else on a per package basis is what makes it possible to run a system which is at once full-featured and lean.
