The problems start when you depart from the vanilla Ubuntu dis= tro=20 and end up with a modified system - I have been looking after a laptop with= =20 Ubuntu for a couple of years now and as long as you keep to the distro way = of=20 doing things it pretty much runs without problems and upgrades are almost=20 seamless. That said for someone who's been using Gentoo for some time now it should n= ot=20 be a big deal to look after a machine like Kevin's, even if the monitor won= 't=20 play initially. I'm still running Gentoo on a 13 year old Pentium III 1GHz= =20 laptop which is refusing to die and compiling anything serious on it is at= =20 least an overnight affair. The monitor problem is probably a KMS configuration issue. Add nomodeset a= t=20 the boot line and you should probably get your monitor again. Before you throw in the towel on Gentoo completely, may I recommend=20 SystemRescueCD. It is updated more often, has the latest drivers and prett= y=20 much works better that the Gentoo LiveCD (most of the time). The only thin= g=20 it does not have is star, which is a package I prefer to do fs backups, but= =20 that's irrelevant anyway. Of course Kevin only knows what is best for Kevin.
