AIUI, 1.8.x is being skipped. The current stable target is xorg-server 1.9.x
(see https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344827 and
http://blogs.gentoo.org/scarabeus/2010/11/08/xorg-server-1-9-stabilisation/).
