So I wasn't imagining things :-) I noticed the same and it seems even a bit better with the very latest qt-4.7.1. Some time ago I read a blog post about KDE and plasma, where stuff will be rewritten for kde-4.6. I can't find it now, it might have been on kde.org, slashdot or even the gentoo planet but it was by that Aaron fellow. He also said that there were speedups possible in Qt as well.
