Remember those monsters that were never bigger than 32M, were about 4 inches tall and had gigantic cables that were sensitive to be sneezed around? Those were MFM drives. These days libata does IDE as well. Think of it as a sort of universal wrapper around all drives you can buy today and gives a consistent interface.
