Only things I can think of:
1. delete some files (probably not possible on usr partition) ;
2. backup your partition, and rerun mkfs.ext2 or mkfs.ext3 and
use the -i option (see man page)

Some advice is given in the handbook on creating partitions to
install gentoo.
