Hi there!
media-sound/transkode [*] was a nice KDE3 application for converting
various audio formats into others. It's gone now, and no, it's not in the
kde-sunset overlay. I cannot even find any information on why it was
removed.
Building it manually does not work at all with gcc-4.3, and with lower
versions I get somewhat further, but building does not finish, too.
Any ideas why it's gone? Or where to look to find this out?
And: Do you know about a replacement which takes a bunch of audio files
and converts them info another format? I can do this on the command line,
but transkode already has some presets for common formats and was just
easy to use, no need to find out all needed options for lame etc.

I've used SoundKonverter¹ for this task in the past. It is also not available
as a KDE3 app anymore, but lives on in KDE4.

Is "It doesn't even build." not enough?
Bye...

Well, in two months ago it built just fine (I already had gcc-4.3 then), I
assumed the ebuild did some patching of the original source to make it
build. But maybe it's that other things changed which transkode depends
on. But I could not find any bug report about this, so I'm wondering. And
I really liked the utility.

This looks good, and I see I already have it installed.
Alas, it does no work at all. The proceed button does nothing. Hm, when
starting it again, it suddenly works. But whatever audio file I select,
its file type is unknown to soundKonverter. The settings dialog shows no
backends at all. Well, maybe an older version than 1.0.0_alpha1 works, I
will give this a try.
Thanks,
Wonko
