Thanks for all the input. I have the network up again. I'm not exactly sure how. I've compiled the e1000 in the kernel. The only thing I've changed is this kernel option ...

I don't know if that's it, but I'm online again. I've been over menuconfig so many times I don't know which is up. Also, I apologise for my fragmented posting. I subscribed no-mail.
