  Thanks for all the input. I have the network up again. I'm not exactly sure how. I've compiled the e1000 in the kernel. The only thing I've changed is this kernel option ...

      Ethernet 10 0r 100Mbit -->
         EISA,VLB, PCI and onboard controllers <*>
I don't know if that's it, but I'm online again. I've been over menuconfig so many times I don't know which is up. Also, I apologise for my fragmented posting. I subscribed no-mail.


P.S. I may be arcane, but I don't wear panties:)
