How to hotplug IDE hard drive?
 I connect the cable, turning on power and then kernel must rescan IDE cable. 
How tell kernel to rescan ?

but you really don't hotplug ide devices. That is evil...

look for -U and -R and read the text carefully.

'works fine' means 'I was lucky' or 'I have rare hardware that truely supports 
hot swapping', Because a lot of 'hot swap' removable hdd racks aren't really 
hot swappable.

No hot-plug with IDE, it simply isn't supported. Maybe you need 
/usr/sbin/partprobe (from parted)

Hot-plugging on IDE is only supported on RAID controllers that can do 
hot-plugging.  The IDE standard itself does not support it, and even if 
it seems to work sometimes, there's a chance you can damage your IDE 
controller.

To be safe, you should get an IDE-to-USB case.  Then you can do 
hot-plugging safely.
