Look at your ps axf.  If it is running via xdm you will see something like:

6403 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/bin/xdm 
6417 tty7     Ss+   28:54  \_ /usr/bin/X :0 -nolisten tcp -br 
vt7 -auth /etc/X11/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-bvk4xxF
