But I have integrated graphics, so I haven't been able to turn the

I played Wolfenstein 3D as I was 7, and Doom when I was 8.
And I'm in no way disturbed...I think ;)

I think you can turn off gore in quake 3,so maybe anything (free)
derived from that engine also has the option!?

Difficult to find an FPS without violence.  Even in Consoles and MS 
Windows.  Why?  FPS = First Person *Shooter*.  Shooter = guns and kills ;)

Also, if commercial games are OK for you, I would recommend "World of 
Goo".  It's not 3D, but lots of fun.  It has a Linux beta version available.

My country isn't included in paypal list, so, I'm going to stick to the 
portage tree :-)

You probably know them already but tuxracer, frozen-bubble,
neverball/neverputt are fun 3D games for adults or kids and don't have
any violence or killing :) I dunno what is good for a 7-year-old kid
but I think any of those should be easy to learn. lincity is not 3D if
I remember but it's also fun no-violence game. Maybe it's too advanced
for a kid of that age.

Judging by network/domain whois and your name, I assume you're from the
same country as I am, and paypal works perfectly for me with both visa
and mastercard. You don't even have to register for a single (not too
large) transaction.

I would recommend Tower Toppler (http://toppler.sourceforge.net/) and
Kiki The Nanobot (http://kiki.sourceforge.net/). I think both of them
are in the portage tree. I enjoyed playing them alot and according to
some the differences between me and a 7 year old is not that big :)

I would like to second Tux Racer, which has already been mentioned.

If it's *games* you're after then secondhand Gamecubes are very cheap  
around here these days, as are disks for them, many of which are very  
friendly indeed to younger kids. Think of Mario Brothers, Harvest Moon  
and other such colourful worlds.

But as a responsible parent you probably hope that games on the  
computer will lead to more serious uses of the PC. ;|

Well, if you can lower your requirements a little to include 2D games
then there are quite a few interesting games:

2D:
1. Freedroid
2. Frozen Bubble
3. Rocks n' diamonds
4. XMoto
... of course there are a few that contain "indirect" violence like
freeciv, battle for wesnoth, etc.

3D:
5. Neverball / Neverputt
6. Planetpenguin racer

... I'm sure there are more examples out there...

Freecol is a great game that is in Portage and can provide for hours of
entertainment - it's a Java-based clone of Sid Meier's Colonization, one of
the best turn-based strategy games ever. Might be a little much for a 7-year
old, but might not be, either. ;)

it is also very buggy - which makes it pretty frustrating for everybody 
without tons of good will. Which makes it unsuitable for children.

Ok, here's the thing I don't understand: you don't want your son to
actually see that when you shoot a person (or animal) that it bleeds,
because, I presume, you tend to find something gory about that.  But the
act of walking around rooms shooting everything that moves -- that's not
gory for some reason?

It seems to me that the act of bleeding (we all do it) is in fact
natural, and shouldn't be that disturbing compared to the acts of
violence committed in FPS to begin with.  This is analogous to the
ratings board giving a "PG-13" rating to a movie with excessing drug use
but an "R" (or worse) rating to a film portraying sex, a natural act.
As if to say, "Yeah, shooting up is pretty bad but, hey, at least
they're not fucking!".

Anyway, if I'm ever unfortunate to find myself on the wrong end of a gun
I hope it's by someone who is aware that if/when he pulls the trigger I
will bleed as opposed to, say, a person who thinks I'll simply fall down
and, after a few seconds, disappear.

Note I'm not disputing the game, just the "logic".

others across the net. No blood and cursing by players
get's you booted.
