It got to big for the old hard drive. Anyway, the install is about 5 years old or so and about 3 years since it got moved. I have Gentoo on it naturally, a ship load of pictures and a few other standard documents and such. I found something called frag check on the forums a long time ago and I got this from it: > 9.46189733169307% non contiguous files, 1.33812703640673 average > fragments. I'm not sure but it looks like it is more fragmented now than it was. It may just be that given file sizes and such that that is as good as it gets. As you may notice, I use reiserfs. It has never been more than 10% that I can recall, even when it does its checking during bootup. I'm not sure what is more accurate, frag check, shake or the check during boot up. Shake is new to me so it does not make much sense yet. Give me a while on it. LOL If this is a little high, what would be the best way to defrag it? Is there a best way? I do have a second hard drive that I back up too. Any Linux defrag tool you encounter will have been written by a third party separate from the developers. It will move blocks around and update superblocks, the drive will have to be unmounted for that to work and a slight misunderstanding of how to do it will ruin data. I once experienced performance losses on a reiserfs-volume used for ccache (tailpacking enabled). What is funny to me, it was higher AFTER running a defrag tool than it was BEFORE running it. Sort of makes you think. I have said myself that Linux does not generally need to be defraged. I have never seen a Linux file system get anything near as bad as windoze. While I don't run windoze I do have family and friends that do so I know how bad it can be. I have seen a lot of windoze be at 40 and 50%. Looked like about every file on the thing was all over the place like bird shot from a shot gun. It is at least as modern as most Linux FS and has some nice features. Surely MS should be capable of implementing the same allocation algorithms we use. I have a AMD 2500+ with 2Gbs of ram. My drives are the bottle neck but I can't say that it is because of it being fragmented. It is a ATA133 system but one drive runs ATA100 if I recall correctly. May be that one drive is older than the other. Frag check is a script that someone wrote. It is not part of reiserfs tools or anything. No, NTFS *is* really bad in that regard. I've seen it HORRIBLY fragmented, and defragging it make a REMARKABLE difference. I defrag my brothers sometimes when I am up there and it has data spread all over the place and takes a long time to get it all back to somewhat reasonable. More information on the subject - beyond the sort of idle chitchat one finds on lists like this one - is not terribly obvious, but Wikipedia suggests I may possibly be correct: Also, ReiserFS had a problem with very fast filesystem aging when compared to other filesystems - in several usage scenarios filesystem performance lowered dramatically with time. ... There are no programs to specifically defragment a ReiserFS file system, although tools have been written to automatically copy the contents of fragmented files hoping that more contiguous blocks of free space can be found. However, Reiser4 will have a repacker that optimizes file fragmentation. (It also seems to suggest that tarring the files elsewhere & reformatting the drive is not the best solution. Using `rm` to remove everything from the filesystem may do the trick, but you might want to dd zeros onto it before reformatting to be sure). That's what I tell people to do. My purely anecdotal evidence: I observe that to get a Windows disk to reliably defrag, it should be taken off-line (otherwise it constantly restarts the process). A huge NTFS disk takes ages to defrag, the time involved seems about the same order as simply move the files off, copy them back. Let's just say it left a bad taste in my mouth. ;-) I'm not saying it is a bad file system for someone but certainly not for me. You are right tho, every file system has some fragmentation. It just can't be otherwise. I guess I could always make my back ups, then redo my partitions, and copy them back. I have done that once before. It was talked about so I suspect that little glitch has been fixed but one can never tell about these things. I'm not a real big fan of defrag on Linux but was just sort of nosing around a bit. On a proper multi-user multitasking OS like Unixes, the heads are going to be moving around all over the disk partition anyway just in general usage, even with zero file fragmentation. How much extra movement does fragmentation introduce? I've been waiting for a proper statistical analysis of this question for years. I'm still waiting :-) Besides, modern storage presents an extra wrinkle. Defrag as most of the world knows it originated in DOS, where disk sectors were guaranteed to be laid out on disk in the order of their sector number. These days we have no such guarantee, and you cannot really be sure if blocks are laid out contiguously on-disk just by looking at the blocks numbers. I believe JFS has a filesystem defrag tool as well, but I don't think it has a file defrag tool. My favorite way to defrag individual files is to mv to /dev/shm, sync, mv back to hard drive. I've found fragmention to be noticable (as far as slowing disk read speeds) on large files that were downloaded over the internet. Large ISO images, TV shows etc that are hundreds of megabytes downloaded over a long period of time (especially if multiple downloads are streaming at once). How about sparse files, for example? AFAIK, you can make a complete backup of a filesytem with (as root, running from another system - such as a liveCD) $ cd /path/to/mountpoint $ tar -cSv -f /path/to/tarball.tar . OK, I once again verified that fragmentation seems to be a big issue even on Linux. I just migrated to ext4, and in order to do that I had to rsync, format and rsync back. The result is similar to the last time I did this (over 8 months ago): emerge --sync takes 15 seconds (at least 3 minutes yesterday) update-eix takes 2 seconds (20 seconds yesterday) And I don't believe it's due to ext4. I think the main problem may not be so much fragmentation of files, but rather their position on disk. Even if files are not fragmented, if they are located too far from each other even though they're related (same directory for example) or there's simply too much empty space between files (I think this is intentional in order to reduce fragmentation) then seek times get really bad. After I rsync the data back, it's nicely and sequentially laid out on disk. I guess over time it starts to get further apart again (to combat fragmentation) and emerge --sync goes up from 15 seconds to 2 minutes again. Even though the files aren't fragmented at all. Some defrag apps for Windoze actually offer to put the files back closer together without trying to defragment at all. Therefore successive runs will naturally be much quicker? And that yesterday was xmas day, a day most likely to involve very few if any portage updates? Or that emerge --sync could easily speed up simply because you had more bandwidth? Maybe reading over what those guys chat about would be interesting to some folks from this thread. I never got it to recover even once. I have heard the same thing about its defrag efficiency tho. Just don't trust it to much with my data. ZFS is the latest filesystem from Sun which ships with the later versions of Solaris/OpenSolaris. I don't want to be seen to advertise it loads here, but it really is good. I recently moved my fileserver to a solaris/ZFS box instead of raid on gentoo. From what I have read it keeps permission, links and everything. I have done it before and it worked fine but that was before udev came along. Also, I do that booted from a CD, either Knoppix or Gentoo CD. I would think that since everything is wiped out in /dev/ when I shutdown, at least that is how it is set anyway, that udev has to recreate all the files in /dev/ during boot up. I got this surprising answer: 25.2668178520421% non contiguous files, 1.41060290111655 average fragments. You may want to look twice at the decimal point. It appears that shake makes things much worse or the fragck script has some serious issues one. I have no clue which. I'm not to worried about this since I will be moving this over to the other drive anyway. I would like to know what command I should use to tar up everything, transfer it over and untar it all on one line if possible? I plan to do this while booted from a Gentoo CD. I just want to try this so that it will be compressed then transfered and untared once on the way. Does this make since? I have used cp -av in the past. Thanks. You can of course use something like # tar czpf - | ssh remote - tar xzpf -C /dir (above probably not syntactically correct), but there are faster and easier options: "cp -a" costs little resources locally and maintains POSIX permissions, while "rsync -aASH --numeric-ids" is perfect for remote copy. You can use rsync also locally. It will (with the "-A" switch) also transfer POSIX-ACLs, if that is of any concern. It is also useful, if a transfer breaks at some moment, because it will kind of continue it :) Omiting the "-v" switch can significantly speed up things - depends on your terminal. In every case it helps to only see the errors, and not let them scroll away by everything that went well. The ones that were root were fine but the ones that should be dale:users was gentoo:users. I stopped and reformatted the drives and it always did the same thing. I finally gave in and let it copy anyway. After it was copied, I chroot'ed in and all the permissions were like they should be including dale:users. Any idea why it did that? It did the same thing with both rsync -ax and cp -av. Just thought it was weird is all. I did copy null and console over after deleting the rest. I also checked /sys and /proc to make sure. I also ran the fragck on it again. I got this: 3.26229678132721% non contiguous files, 1.08394810041292 average fragments. Not to bad I guess. There is about 500,000 files or so. Gentoo normally makes the first user 1000, which is probably the UID of dale on your installation and gentoo on the live CD.Root is always UID 0, which is why that was shown correctly. -- Neil Bothwick I doubt therefore I might be. Unfortunately I have no Windows at hand to make a similar test for comparison, but I believe the results won't be quite different. Preferably, remount the filesystems after each run and repeat 1000 times. Then analyze the statistical distribution of your results. Actually my results are a little lower than what I expected but enough for me to say that fragmentation matters. At least until proved otherwise. Fragmentation leads to seeks. The average seek time on modern disks is several milliseconds. I pre-cache all my major software at boot time, so I don't really want to dump caches there ;) ... maybe it'll be a good use for my old amd64... but, umm... it'll need an OS and even the slightest potential of fragmented files first... maybe I'll make that happen tonight if I get bored. As a side note, SSDs are the quickest way to remove all worries where fragmentation is concerned, having negligible seek times as they do... and physically smaller platters (2.5in SAS drives, the Velociraptor, etc) at least make a small dent on worst case seek times... reducing the impact that way. -- Poison [BLX] Joshua M. It's true for Linux and any other kernel designed to work with many implementations of "the same" thing (FS in this case). This was caused by a crash during an installation (don't remember what we installed - it's been about 9 years ago :-) BUT this was an example of total destruction and mayhem -- absolutely irreparable. After about 120 errors (filenames with very much foreign sounding names - high bit turned on) we gave up and reinstalled everything. Probably the MFT was damaged beyond repair. Because the user liked to power his PC down at the wall - for energy- saving reasons or peace-of-mind over house-fires, I'm knackered if I know - and because "it was taking too long to shutdown" when he wanted to go to bed - I know one of these was unplugged whilst still shutting down, but surely not all of them were. I live in area with frequent power outages and have my share of damaged FSes and destroyed HDDs. (Un)fortunately I can't put NTFS in the same chart for comparison, because I have "no Windows, no Gates - only Apache inside". (sorry for the old joke, I couldn't help it) :) P.S. I checked with Konqueror and there are 491,319 files and 52,074 directories. Since some of those may be big files, OOo comes to mind, 10% may not be to bad.
