Hi,
some time ago I asked what to do if kde blocks kde...
The according HowTo (emergeing from monolithic
to split kde install) says one has first
to unmerge the old monolithic installation of
kde and the install the split stuff.
But regardless what I am doing...
emerge -C <blocking item>
shows me a rmoving action on my harddisc and
the following
emerge --pretend --color=n --verbose --update --deep world
still shows that item being blocking new stuff.
I think _physically_ the old stuff is rmoved but
from emerge's point of view it is still there.
How can I fix that problem ?
Kind regards,
Meino Cramer

You didn't give any output, so I have to guess. Most likely a different
package is still installed which needs the same kde you just removed and that
in turn conflicts with what you want to install now.
Post the full output of 'emerge -pvuNDt world' and we'll deciphyer it for you

Aside: You probably want to unmerge this one above too

That is a monolithic package, but portage wants to Replace it, which means it
was never uninstalled. I'll give you the short version, followed by the
(longer) explanation of what happened:
Short version:
- unmerge all these packages (list ripped straight out from the kde ebuild)
RDEPEND="~kde-base/kdelibs-${PV}
~kde-base/kdebase-${PV}
~kde-base/kdeaddons-${PV}
~kde-base/kdeadmin-${PV}
~kde-base/kdeartwork-${PV}
~kde-base/kdeedu-${PV}
~kde-base/kdegames-${PV}
~kde-base/kdegraphics-${PV}
~kde-base/kdemultimedia-${PV}
~kde-base/kdenetwork-${PV}
~kde-base/kdepim-${PV}
~kde-base/kdetoys-${PV}
~kde-base/kdeutils-${PV}
~kde-base/kdewebdev-${PV}
accessibility? ( ~kde-base/kdeaccessibility-${PV} )
- run 'emerge -av --depclean' as a sanity check. The output should be obvious,
it might list a few more kde packages that you missed. Unmerge those, but
note their names in case you want to put them back later
- emerge kde-meta (or if you prefer to get a smaller set instead of all of kde
follow the handbook and emerge just the -meta packages you want)
Long version:
The traditional kde packages in portage (from long long ago) mirrored the
organization of how the kde project released their stuff - as 16 or so huge
packages. The kde ebuild by itself does nothing, if you look inside you'll
see it's just a huge RDEPEND. The 16 packages in that are the ones that
actually install kde.
You seem to have at one point emerged kde, and got all 16 packages with it.
Then you unmerged kde, which worked OK except that it left the other 16 in
place, and they promptly blocked all the kde-meta stuff.
The monolithic ebuilds block the -meta ebuilds as they duplicate each other.
You have to choose one or the other and can't mix them in any way. It may
have been possible to write some fancy code in the -meta ebuilds to unmerge
old packages and install the equivalent new ones but that would have been a
major pain in the ass and is guaranteed to work for most users and completely
destroy some other user's system. So the devs instead made the sane choice of
forcing you to make up your mind and first setting up your machine correctly
the way you want it.
<humour mode on>
This is TheOneTruGentooWay(tm), a devious evil policy whereby gentoo devs
assume that you are in fact a really super-intelligent person who can make up
their own mind, who is absolutely not an idiot and knows what they want.
As you can see this is a wonderful way to work, but it also means that you get
to be responsible for your own machine and wade through 100s of lines of
portage output so you can decide what it is that you really want.

Hi Alan,
yes, this is the point where I am currently: Trying to unmerge these
packages.
It works physically, but after unmerging the stuff and redoing
a emerge -pvuNDt (as I did to send you the list after trying to
unmerge all packages in question) emerge thinks, that all that is
still on my harddisc.
See also my initial mail.
Kind regards,
Meino Cramer

I'm no expert on this, but to me this looks like you're running some
unstable gnome/gtk packages? This particular line reminds me of this
quite fresh bug at bugs.gentoo.org:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=239490
Maybe some of your unstable gnome stuff is causing some weird
side-effects? What if this gnome's unstable gail- and gtk+-related
issue is first fixed by that hint in that bug's last comment?

That sounds like an impossibility (or a portage bug that hits only you...)
Can you supply the exact unmerge command you used?

Those first 11 are definitely monolithic packages and are definitely installed
according to portage. I can't assess how expert you are with portage, so I'll
get the easy questions out of the way first.
If those packages are in world, you have to explicitly remove them
emerge -avC =kdegraphics-3.5.9 =kdeartwork-3.5.9 ... etc etc etc
If they are not in world, just dependencies of kde-3.5.9 then
emerge -av --depclean
should be enough to remove them. The easy way to see if a package is in world
is if a colourized emerge output lists in in bright green.

I am still in trouble here:
emerge -avC
says, that there no packages found with the name <package-name> (for
example "=kdegraphics-3.5.9" oder "kdegraphics").
emerge -av depclean fails with:

Have you forgotten to run `emerge --update --newuse --deep world` prior to
depclean? It may be necessary to manually uninstall packages that no longer
exist in the portage tree since it may not be possible to satisfy their
dependencies. Also, be aware of the --with-bdeps option that is documented
in `man emerge`.
* GNU info directory index is up-to-date.
and the suggested
emerge --update --newuse --deep world
fails due to blocking packages.
...sigh.

yesno: emerge -C removes it (?) physically, but it is still reported

There is one blocker less, which is slightly better but certainly not
a full solution. What worries me is if your portage doesn't find the
kdegraphics package to remove -- as you wrote in your later email to
Alan.
Does it find any other installed monolithic kde packages to remove at
all, i.e., what does this command print out (should be all on one
line/command, probably gets wrapped in email client):
emerge -pvC kdebase kdeaddons kdeadmin kdeartwork kdeedu kdegames
kdegraphics kdemultimedia kdenetwork kdepim kdetoys kdeutils kdewebdev
kdeaccessibility
The printout should tell us if you have any remnants of monolithic kde
packages left.

The following may be just a wild guess, but who knows...
You state you did an emerge -C of some packages, but the packages are still
reported as present by portage/emerge, right? Did you ever check that the
files from those packages are really gone? If they are, did you check wether
only the entries for these packages are still in the portage database
(/var/db/pkg)?
HTH...

Looks like something has gone...fingers crossed.
How to kick the others ?
Again with emerge -C <package> ???
I better ask in beforehand ... trying to avoid the next knot in logic

Sure, because of -p(retend). It did nothing but show you what it _would_ do.
Now run the command again without -p. This will remove 3.5.9 _and_ 3.4.3.
Bye...

<Alan realises he's been daft, slaps head>
Do you have any other versions of KDE in a higher SLOT?
If you SLOTted 4.<something> and 3.5, then unmerging the package without using
a version/slot number will possibly remove the higher version number.

It getting more confused:
This morning I did a

it reports packages of kde to be updated, which are not shown with
emerge -pvuNDt world
same goes for
emerge -pv gnome
which shows me a bunch of gnome related packages to be updated, which
are not shown with emerge -pvuNDt world.
It seems the "world" of emerge is smaller as my system ?!?
What is wrong here? What did I so badly wrong?
Kind regards,

Sorry, I mistyped some tings:
I meant (hrrrmm): :)
The /blocking/ items are only shown with
emerge -pv kde.
and
emerge .pv gnome shows package to be updated.
emerge -pvuNDt world shows no blocking items nor
gnome packages to be updated.
...its too early in the morning (7.28 am). ;)

Nope, not updated. It shows new installs (N). In addition, it shows that you
already have some split ebuilds installed which block the monolithic ones.
I would suggest that you simply install kde-meta first this should solve your
problems.

This output is correct.

This is also correct

You did nothing wrong, you just have the wrong idea about what portage is
telling you.
Step back and think about this for just a second. When you run 'emerge kde'
you are asking portage to add new package to your system, and they will go in
world. It will also show all new packages that will be installed due to
DEPENDs. That's why ever line in that output starts with [ebuild N ] -
they are new to your system.
When you run 'emerge -pvuND world' you are asking portage to update your
entire system, do a deep resolve looking into DEPENDS as well, and to take
changed/added/removed USE flags into account as well. This will not add new
packages as you didn't tell portage to install any new packages. Kinda
obvious really...

OK, that explains the last post then :-)

The blocks do not exist until you try to emerge something that will block with
them. Sort of like how my wife does not object to me having a girlfriend
until I actually go out and try to get one :-)

You ask portage to install gnome, it does not trigger blocks, so everything
works fine.
In what way does this differ from what you expect to happen?

Emerge world updates everything you already have and/or need to have. You
don't have kde and don't need kde and haven't told portage to install it. So
it doesn't block.
Do you realise that kde is a monolithic package and the corresponding split
ebuild is kde-meta?

Correct so far.

This depends. Changed use flags and/or changed dependencies in updated
packages may well trigger new package installs to fulfill the changed
dependencies.
Bye...
