[gentoo-user] getting GMT to use DST

Hi All,

I have had a machine running for a little while without many problems, 
until I tried to use ntp to keep my clock in sync.

I have got my /etc/localtime and my /etc/conf.d/clock to reflect my GMT 
location, yet all timeservers I try to sync to put me an hour behind. I 
am in the UK and currently our clocks are forwards, or is it backwards?

Either way I cannot have my machine out 1 hour for half the year. What 
should my solution be?

probably because while you are in a "GMT location", strictly speaking
you are not on GMT time.  GMT time does not include daylight savings,
AFAIK, otherwise everyone who referenced GMT would have to alter their
time according to whether both GMT and their timezone was on daylight
savings at that particular time - a big mess, especially for the
Southern Hemisphere, or places like where I live, that don't use DST.

You need to set /etc/conf.d/clock to GMT (if your bios keeps time in GMT
- up to you) and set /etc/localtime to London, or whatever.  I think...
I get confused sometimes :)

Hi,

Excellent keeping GMT in /etc/conf.d/clock and setting /etc/localtime to 
Europe/London did the trick.

Until you next emerge timezone-data, when /etc/localtime will be set to
GMT. /etc/conf.d/clock determines what will be used for /etc/localtime,
it has no effect at other times. You need to set both to Europe/London.

/etc/conf.d/clock has two relevant variables, CLOCK and TIMEZONE. Here are 
mine:

CLOCK="UTC"
TIMEZONE="Europe/Berlin"

Don't know wether setting CLOCK to "GMT" will also do.

It's the TIMEZONE setting that matters here, CLOCK should be either "UTC"
or "local".

Hello Neil,

I have an identical question. 
I set /etc/localtime this way:
cp /usr/share/zoneinfo/EST /etc/localtime

I'm in Florida and my /etc/conf.d/clock settings
are:

CLOCK="EST"
TIMEZONE="/usr/share/zoneinfoAmerica/New_York"

Is it correct to use EST or should it be local?

"UTC" or "local" are the only choices, "UTC" being the better one.

Should be only "America/New_York".

You no longer need to do that. The timezone-data ebuild used the
TIMEZONE variable in conf.d/clock to copy the correct file for you.

local (or UTC, which is generally preferable). This variable sets whether
your clock uses local or UTC time, it has nothing to do with setting your
timezone.

TIMEZONE should be America/New_York

local is good to use if you dual boot with Windows, otherwise use UTC.

I too am on UK time ( Oxford to be precise)
My /etc/conf.d/clock contains:

CLOCK="UTC"

# Select the proper timezone.  For valid values, peek inside of the
# /usr/share/zoneinfo/ directory.  For example, some common values are
# "America/New_York" or "EST5EDT" or "Europe/Berlin".

TIMEZONE="GB"

For NTP I followed the instructions in http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_NTP.
