Sometimes when killing X ist is not automatically restarted on my systems, maybe you need to run /etc/init.d/xdm restart from a text console to make this work. Instead of Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, I would use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to go directly to a text console. There I would have a look at the at the last lines of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of "top", maybe this shows something like a nspluginviewer process gone wild which you can kill. Also try to kill firefox, will X work fine again then?
