I'm not sure what to make of the above, because, obviously, I'm on the
internet at the moment, but there's a message about eth0 not having a
link, when it's up and running on eth0...

thanks,

it would have been helpfull if you have told us the ifconfig output of the
livecd.

btw. in the documentation is a nice part about configuring networking - and if
you are lucky all you have to do is /sbin/dhcpcd

Since you have not shown us how the LiveCD detects your cards:

Assuming that you have modprobe -v 8139too and it loads fine (or you can see
it under lsmod | grep 8139too as being loaded) then '/sbin/dhcpcd eth0 up'
should get you an IP address. Instead of eth0 you may need to run eth1
depending which iface is mapped by udev to your RTL8139 ethernet card.

For the link error you get, I think you need to have a CAT5 wire connecting
your ethernet card to your router.

If you want to configure your wireless connection instead (more complicated)
then you need to modprobe -v sis900 and then follow the handbook.

Thanks, I'll give that a try next time.

The keypoint to me is that I can reboot into the Fedora live cd, and
everything's fine. Or, I can boot into windows 2000. Why is the gentoo
live cd behaving differently, or having different requirements?

Heh. It's not really a wireless connection, though, is it? As far as
the pc is concerned it's a wired connection. correct? I'm using the
asus wl-330g as a wireless bridge. To my knowledge, fedora just sees a
wired connection. I can try knoppix, but would expect it to work out of
the box, too.

How did you know it was wireless connection?

This is telling us that your default card is not getting an IP address back
from the router. I am assuming that this is because you do not have a cat5
cable connecting you to the router and you rely on the wireless adapter,
which in turn has not been configured?

> livecd ~ # ifconfig

Do you know which device this MAC address belongs to? lshw should show you.

It seems that only one device is configured (eth0). Knowing which device
(wired or wireless) is mapped to eth0 would help the whole process.

OK you have two adaptors:

> Fast Ethernet (rev 91)

> 00:09.0 Ethernet controller: D-Link System Inc RTL8139 Ethernet (rev 10)

I don't know which one is a wireless and which one is a wired NIC (from a
quick google they both look like wired PCI cards to me).

Modules have been installed.

This does not have a configured interface.

This one does and it is eth1.

When you run /sbin/dhcpcd eth1 what do you get?

You may also want to try iwconfig eth0, or iwconfig eth1 in case either are
wireless adaptors. If none of your PCI cards are wireless you may want to
modprobe -r 8139too since it is not being recognised anyway, re- modprobe -v
sis900 and check what is shown under ifconfig as a recognised NIC device.

Hope this helps.

It's kinda one of those things where more information would just muddy
the waters ;)

However, the fedora live cd navigates it fine. I repeat this to make
clear that the depth of the issue should shallow, or at least this is
my belief.

Because I use the Asus WL-330g, it has to use specific NIC, in this
case the built-in NIC, the SiS, since that's what it's configured for.
 I'll look into it.

gotcha.

yes, both wired.

good. this is a major point from my point of view: this is *not* a
driver issue?

will do.

Thanks, yes. From Linux (gentoo or fedora) it doesn't even appear to
be a wireless conection to my knowledge. I'll try that modprobe and
will get back to the list.

Thank you,

Thufir

ps: I used the live cd, 2006, on a different box (different
motherboard) with the same Asus WL-330g wireless bridge device
thing-a-ma-jig in the past. worked fine. This is a different NIC,
but...I might try the 2006 CD, too.

You're welcome. How did you get the second NIC recognised? By removing the
module and then installing again?

I think your original problem was that you were not running dhcpcd on the NIC
connected to your router.

Nope. Simply entering those command got things working. I copied
pasted to show how the network started off unavailable then, after
entering the dhcp command.

What does that mean? Or, what does the Fedora live cd do differently?
The Asus WL-330g is what the NIC connects to, and dhcp is used and
seems to work fine in other distros.

Maybe that comes across as inflamatory, but that's not my intent.
Just want to get the facts across :)
