I hate to be a nasty evil person and say this, but I will anyway - this has no place on a Gentoo mailing list IMO. Post it in the off topic section of the Gentoo forums I guess but posting these on a mailing list is pretty much spam.

This is a very risky thing to do, however, because the hackers' metric for
what is exciting probably differs from yours. Posting from the International
Space Station would qualify, for example, but posting on behalf of a
feel-good charitable or political cause would almost certainly not. In fact,
posting “Urgent: Help me save the fuzzy baby seals!” will reliably get you
shunned or flamed even by hackers who think fuzzy baby seals are important.

I don't know about everyone else but I signed up here to recieve discussion on Gentoo Linux, not on dolphins.
The issue here isn't that I agree or disagree with the cause you posted here about, I simply disagree that this was an appropriate place to post it.

The dolphins are being massacred. We need them:

Description: A file manager for KDE focusing on usability.
If we ignore the plight of this amazing piece of KDE software, half our
users won't be able to navigate their filesystems any more. The other
half of the last half will be OK (they use Gnome) and the second half
of the other half will be looking around saying "wtf? I use

Um, never mind about the second half.
WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK ABOUT THE KDE USERS?

To the contrary, I think that the OP has a lot to do with Gentoo and
Linux in general.
You see every day, like the poor Japanese Dolphins, countless numbers of
cows are murdered every day. They are slaughtered, cut up, ground into
little bits, you name it, all in the name of greed (both in terms of
money and food). These innocent little souls are brought to an early
death so that some may enjoy a half pound greasy burger or perhaps a 12
oz. prime rib (with grilled onions, mashed potatoes, and cream corn on
the side). Like our Rising Sun Flipper, we must do something to stop
the bovine genocide. Remember that our mascot and transgendered
spiritual leader, Larry, is a cow, and therefore shares the same risk to
his life as Willy or Bessie.
And if they can go after dolphins and cows, then can penguins be next?
Could little Tux's life be in danger as well?
These are the things every (Gentoo) Linux user should be concerned
about. Kudos to the OP for bringing this important issue to our
attention!

I know. But at least I hope they are not tortured and killed the way
these dolphins are. Plus, as you know, dolphins are not fish, but
mammals just like cows and dogs are. And which one of the three is more
clever and friend to man is another discussion (not for this list). And
there is another difference: The killing of those dolphins. each year,
in the numbers seen on the video, may be a threat to nature's ecological
system.

It may,m it may not, that is open to debate. What is not in doubt is that
this has absolutely bugger all to do with this list. There are plenty of
places to discuss such matters - this is not one of them.

The post that I made was satire. Its porpoise was to inspire a laugh, a
chuckle, at most a humorous response. Not a debate. Debates are for
serious people.
Look the fact is every day:
* A dolphin is killed
* A cow is killed
* Someone litters
* Someone is killed/tortured in some war-torn nation
* A young child is sexually molested by someone close to them
* Jesus kills a kitten
The point is this is not the
tree-huggin-peace-lovin-let-the-dolphins-live mailing list. If I wanted
to discuss that crap, I'd join that list. This is gentoo-user. We
discuss (Gentoo) Linux. If we welcome every other issue that any
subscriber just happens to also have a passion about then we should just
rename the list to... whatever.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled mailing list, already in
progress...

I really don't care if consider the above as spam or not or watever, for
this list or for any list. I am subscribed to this list so I posted it
here. If I had posted it to a dolphins related list there would be no
gain as they should most probably be aware of it. So if you don't have
any good suggestions for the "OT", just let those that may show some
interest for them, to just see what it's about. You don't have to bother
the list with those "smart ass" comments about OT posts.
My OT post would be one and only one, but you just made it a thread.

I don't see a problem with OT posts that have some vague relevance e.g: List policies, Linux security issues (for example " OT - Some miscellanous questions about hack attacks and dealing with them"). By your logic people could discuss *anything* on this list with the defense of "Some people might want to see it...". There has to be some sort of line drawn really, and I can't speak for anyone else but that line stops at the edge of computer-related discussion in my mind.
Anyway, it's 6.30pm and I'm finished beating this dead dol... horse so I'm going home.

If one just looks at my initial post, he should be able to see, that I
wasn't going to discuss it, at least not in this list. But I just
couldn't resist those smart-ass comments/replies. As if I bothered so
much the people reading this list...

If you don't care about the other subscribers here, I suggest you to host
your own mailing list, i.e. gentoo-user-and-everything-else-aggelos-considers-relevant,
and unsubscribe here. ;-)

Other people's replies to your off-topic posting do not mitigate your
responsibility for actually causing these replies one bit.

What outstanding arrogance!
This list is primarily a vehicle for peer support. You total disregard
for the intent of the list and the wishes of other subscribers may well
come back to bite you the next time you need to use the list for its true
purpose.

His arrogance is a desperation signal. He, in fact, knows and are
conscient of his mistake and because of a lack of justification to
give due to what he did, he act like this.
I suggest to ignore such users and do what Neil said: wait for this
user need to use the list for its write propose and just ignore him.
In this way, he'll learn the real propose of this list. It would be
more sensible if this user realize (since the first reply, from
Nelson) that he made a mistake. In this way we would gain time instand
of discuss something not productive. In fact, dolphin massacre is
something not human, but it is also something not discussed here.

That bit of brilliant thinking could be used to justify posting
absolutely anything to any list, "since you are subscribed" to it.
It could also be used to justify urinating in any kiddy pool you
happen to be standing in.
> You don't have to bother the list with those "smart ass" comments

The responses to your post are important; they discourage others from
abusing the list as you have. (They should discourage you from doing
it again as well, but that doesn't seem to be working very well.) It
does create a lot of traffic which wouldn't have been necessary if you
hadn't abused the list in the first place, but posting disapproval is
the best way for a community to regulate itself when someone makes a
choice as bad as the one you have made.
Behaving however you want no matter how others feel about it is not
only arrogant but rather stupid, at least in case you wanted to
continue to use the list to discuss Gentoo issues. A simple "it
won't happen again" would probably have sufficed to make the list
useful to you going forward, and maybe it still would.

Yes, but we love it. I would continue, but I'm going to the cheese shop
in front of the Ministry of Silly Walks.
Kidding apart... The aim of it all is that the massive response to the
attempted spamming should in principle avoid recidive behaviour. It's
all about estirpating the bad plants before they invade the field.
Aggelos seems to have left the ml, so it's a good result on our side.
The problem is that if you leave people like Aggelos undisturbed, the ML
will become 90% off topic and 10% on topic posts in less than a month.
This kind of apparently senseless effort actually makes sense, trust me.
And it's fun too. :)

You do know that some people have to pay for how much data they use
right? They may not in the US or in some countries but I know there
used to be a guy on here that had to pay a monthly fee plus so much
depending on how much data he got. So if he is still here, he is paying
for spam, including this message I'm sorry to say.
Me, I try not to go to a Windoze list and spam them with Linux
questions. I don't do that out of respect for the other people on the
list. They may not want to here about Linux anyway. Maybe what we need
here is a moderator and a ban list. Spam the list, get banned. Do it
enough, you get banned for good. That may solve the problem.
It would just seem to me that it is easier for us to not let people spam
the list than to have the above happen. I have once or twice asked a
windoze question on here but I kept it as brief as I could. I was
trying to get Samba to share with my soon to be ex's laptop. Some
people unlike me use windoze too. Some here may even be really good at it.
It's the same with top posting or using HTML. You may do it, but you
may not get the replies you need either. I'm not going to mention where
the OP next emails are going to go. I won't be seeing them though.
My $0.02 worth.

All those that replied wouldn't reply if it were an actual "spam".
An off-topic is not necessarily spam. And that's exactly the specific case.

You don't have to look at the contents of a post that you think is spam.
But in the specific dolphin massacre case, those that look at it's
contents, will see that it is *not* about viagra or the like, and so, in
that case it's just off-topic.

Let me add though, that in your case, not having looked at it, will
always remain spam. Simple as that.

At this rate of discussing about if this is spam or not all the dolphins
will die. And of course... this is a Gentoo Mailing List, please don't write
thinks off-topic here. If you want to help the dolphins... go to GreenPeace!
or complain to the Japanese Government! here you don't obtain nothing.
And also... if Dolphins are in danger is because PEOPLE want to eat them.
Spread the word against dolphin-eaters! But please... NO MORE SPAM. This is
bad for the Gentoo List.

Yummm! Dolphin tastes good, I bet. Since you have so obviously little
taste when it comes to mailing list etiquette, you probably aslo have
bad taste when it comes to dolphins, so I think it an enticing idea to
try some.
Yumm!! I can almost taste it now ... nice fillets of dolphin flesh,
all that smooth string muscle just waiting for my carving nice. But I
will cook it first. Never have liked raw fish, never have tried raw
mammal. I wonder if I can find online recipes for dolphin steaks.

Say, I bet there are mailing lists meant for save the dolphin
vegetarians. I bet a search would find them. Maybe I will go there
and start posting harpoon stories, linux stories, all sorts of fun
stuff. But it will be ok if I label it off-topic.
Yumm ... dolphin steaks. I can smell the roasting flesh already.

Oh, come on, why can't you have the decency to spam^H post off-topic
from just one e-mail account? It is annoying to have to kill-file
multiple ones.

If you had the decency to accept off-topic as off-topic, spam as spam,
simple as simple, and hypocrisy as hypocrisy...

You seem to be evidently void of any sense of relevance and proportionality.
This is a 'gentoo-user' mailing list intended to serve the needs of
gentoo-users; specific support and discussion needs which are relevant to the
Gentoo meta-distribution. Had you been around for any length of time you
would have observed the fact that "off-topic" on this list is invariably
still relevant to IT, computers, Linux and related topics.
After many people told you that your topic is considered irrelevant spam for
this list and that you are consuming unnecessary bandwidth, you continue to
annoy with your persistence to spam. Exhibiting a messianic zeal for a good
cause in this inappropriate way, has ended up causing a disservice to an
otherwise laudable cause. Your ends do not justify your means and in this
case label you as fanatic idiot - because you have no sense of relevance,
proportionality and respect for your audience.
Couldn't you just find a *suitable* ML to raise your issue and leave us alone?

I could have said it better but I would have been rude doing it. I
don't mind something off topic as in related to computers at least.
Last time I checked, dolphins do not run Gentoo, Linux or even windoze
for that matter.
Maybe you need to accept the "simple as simple" part you wrote. It's
really simple, this is spam.

At last we agree - your spam is off-topic :-).
On a more serious note, I've added both your email addresses to my

Please for the love of God/Dolphins/Deity of Choice/Science can we just leave Agg to his arrogance and self-righteousness, add his email address to your spamfilter or someone boot him off the list and stop going on about it. He obviously wont learn and I'm beginning to get annoyed with this topic appearing in my inbox several days after the spammer spammed and was suitably chastised for it.

Agg, accept to be in an internet community and to follow the rules of
this community.
If this community labels your mail to this community as spam, this mean
that for every practical reason *it is spam*, no matter how different is
your opinion on it.
If you don't like it, fine, but look at another community. You won't
make us change our rules.

Not if they don't all vanish in a puff of smoke just before the Vogons
get here, leaving behind a note that says "So long and thanks for all
the fish".
Besides, I think the second most intelligent life form on the planet has
already figured out how to deal with this onslaut from the third most

Well... dolphins are supposed to be pretty smart but can they post to mailing lists?
On the other hand perhaps they are so smart they dont *need* mailing lists and if they did they wouldn't post "save the pretty human" spam.

It seems they are just ignoring him. Probably he is not the first
clueless moron spamming the lkml, so they just filter his address and go
away with it.
If he continues this way, in a few days he will accomplish two truly
remarkable feats:
- Being blacklisted from most linux ml/forums
- Led people to hate dolphins
And only with a few bytes of mail body.

Here Here If you really want to save lives join peta or the spca and leave the rest of us blissfully unaware. In this lists until they start issuing aquriums with gentoo cds I have no need for help with a dolphin. Also its spam in the fact it is unsolicited communication to a sibject clearly unwanted in this forum. Sorry for top post on my treo and only way.
