No you are not alone. I eventually found proof that successfully making an initramfs is a process involving a lot of voodoo, full moons, eye of newt and a human sacrifice. Oh yeah, there's aliens involved too. But I only got the proof I mentioned after I signed an NDA with the alien's, so I can't give you the proof too otherwise I'd have to kill you right away. So sorry, you'll have to stick with the good old stuff that can be understood.
