I found the dbus USE flag to be the troublesome one. While my solution was not as elegant as Mr. Andresen's, it did work. I simply ran the emerge without the dbus use flag. When it came avahi's turn to compile, it stopped and balked at me, so I emerged it with the dbus use flag... from there, installation continues as normal.
